Damn, get out of my head, this sounds so familiar. I wish I could mod you (and your parent) up. I had an almost identical experience between High School and College. I suspect, based on my personal experiences and observing others around me with a similar geeky bent, that this is rather common. I think it could frequently boil down to being an introvert and poor social skills for many men. It also didn't help much that many of the people in high school knew each other since grade school (much harder to over come preconceived notions about people for good or bad). College gave me a lot of opportunities to work on myself as well as interact with a lot of new people.

Machine Gun Sentry Robot Unveiled 845

mpthompson writes "Samsung has partnered with a Korean university to develop a robotic sentry equipped with a 5.5mm machine gun. Meant for deployment along the DMZ between North and South Korea, the $200,000 robot employs sophisticated pattern recognition software for targeting humans. No three laws here, but the robot does include a speaker that can be used to politely issue a warning before taking the target out. The promotional video is both scary and funny at the same time."

SGI Announces MIPS and IRIX End of Production 275

ramakant writes "Considering the recent news regarding their dismal financial situation, it should come as no surprise that SGI announced end of production for MIPS based hardware and the IRIX operating system. From the article: "SGI launched the MIPS/IRIX family of products in 1988. Since then, this technology has powered servers, workstations, and visualization systems used extensively in Manufacturing, Media, Science, Government/Defense, and Energy. After nearly two decades of leading the world in innovation and versatility, the MIPS IRIX products will end their general availability on December 29, 2006." IRIX has always been my favored OS, and I'll be sad to see it gone. Hopefully my O2 will survive for many years to come."
