Submission + - Government web sites go dark after severe PHP vulnerabilities disclosed (reuters.com)

smooth wombat writes: PHP disclosed two critical vulnerabilities in their programming language and urged web site operators to immediately apply the fix. As a result, government web sites in Europe and elsewhere temporarily went dark on Wednesday as operators worked to protect their systems.

Dane Knecht, the chief technology officer of Web and cloud security firm Cloudflare (NET.N), opens new tab, said that attacks were emerging and Cloudflare was updating its firewall rules as a stopgap measure.

"We are seeing early attacks emerging and are updating mitigations as new vectors show up. This is a STOPGAP only. Patch as soon as PHP releases the update," he said on X.

Officials have said that all PHP versions from PHP 5 onward could be affected, although PHP has not yet disclosed which versions are vulnerable.

The same could be said for computers. Why spend all the money on increasing processor or RAM speed or new video cards when you could just update the code behind the OS and software? We'd still be using 486 machines!

it's been over 3 decades, even the most tech challenged/uninterested user surely understands by now that personal files and the web are very different contexts?

Nope. We have people who have no idea where their files are saved. They can't say whether it's OneDrive, their desktop, or a network drive.

This doesn't even touch on the issue of people, particularly the younger ones, not knowing what a directory is or how to set up a directory structure to organize their files.

Search has only exasperated this. Just type something in and waste time seeing what comes up rather than going directly to it. This includes printers. The number of tickets we get each week from people saying they "searched" for their printer and can't find it is truly staggering.

So no, people do not understand the difference between local files and the web.

There is still the issue of mouse-clicks not registering. It could be anywhere. You click in a text box on a web page and the mouse doesn't get put there. Click an option in a piece of software and nothing happens. Try to double-click and the software/file doesn't open.

At this point I click something once then hit Enter about half the time since I know that will work.

This has been happening since Windows 10 so it's not specific to 11.

Peter Ticktin, Peter's attorney, said that she proposed that Trump seize ballots from across the country and conduct a hand recount, reports Kyle Clark of Colorado's 9 News.

"It's a good plan, and I do think that something like that is probably going to happen," Ticktin said to right-wing podcaster Joe Oltmann in Colorado. "In the event that we have this kind of disaster, and everything goes wrong, and the vote is crazy, and the senatorial races put it up there to remove the president and the vice president, in that nightmare, should it come true, Donald Trump is not going to relinquish control again."

And by disaster, they mean a blue wave sweeping across the country and driving out Republicans.

Which is what I've been saying as well. If all you're doing is asking for suggestions to something you have already written, using AI is no different than using a human editor. It's your work. It's been written. You're just looking for advice on how to improve it.

This is completely different than people who tell AI what they want and it does all the work.
