Submission + - Facebook Users Are Sharing Less and It's a Big Problem (fortune.com)

Colin Castro writes: Facebook is starting to decline in original posts and people sharing their thoughts.

"Facebook’s decline in personal updates reflects a common growing pain for online communities. What starts out as as special and intimate place to share things grows into a big, impersonal, and professional platform."

The author points out one of the reasons why: "They know that, unlike in Facebook’s earlier days, their status updates can now be seen by distant relatives, high school classmates, and co-workers—so they don’t share anything too personal."

Submission + - Google accidentally reveals data on 'right to be forgotten' requests (theguardian.com)

Colin Castro writes: From the article: "The Guardian has discovered new data hidden in source code on Google’s own transparency report that indicates the scale and flavour of the types of requests being dealt with by Google – information it has always refused to make public. The data covers more than three-quarters of all requests to date." Followed by: "Less than 5% of nearly 220,000 individual requests made to Google to selectively remove links to online information concern criminals, politicians and high-profile public figures, the Guardian has learned, with more than 95% of requests coming from everyday members of the public."

Submission + - Carl Sagan Smoked Cannabis (sfgate.com) 2

Colin Castro writes: “I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, unavailable to us without such drugs,” Sagan wrote in 1971, under the name Mr. X.

MarijuanaMajority.com founder Tom Angell spent a few days this summer in the Library of Congress researching the iconic American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist and author and has come away with a bounty.

Angell says he found some never-before-released writings on marijuana policy from the author of classics such as ‘Contact’ and the TV show ‘Cosmos’, which is the most widely watched series in the history of American public television.
