Journal The Cydonian's Journal: Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an announcement to make.... 12

I have now graduated from university in a record 3.5 years, mostly to beat my financial, and legal obligations by a full six months. The degree is a Bachelors with a major in Comp Sc (focus on information communication and management), and a minor in Mathematics. Also, I got an A for my year-long final year research project.

My long term goal is to get back to grad school and jump knee-deep into research, and continue the stuff I was doing in the final year. But before that, I'm looking for some full-time work experience, either in research or in the corporate world. Yup, I'm already looking for a full-time job now, (doing a part-time stint at a major company here), will be updating stuff here as well on the exact specs. But before we get into all those gritsy details on future, just to re-inforce the point:-

I GOT A BLODDY A FOR MY RESEARCH PROJECT, YOU DUMB FUCKS!!!!1!11!!!!! I'M A FREAKING GENIUS!!!! WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!

And oh, for those of you who've emailed and IM'ed me already, thanks for your support. Deeply appreciate that. Kinda wading through junkloads of mail now, so bear with me, but will be mailing you all individually with my exact contact details soon. Yup, my snail mail address, telephone and mobile numbers have changed, or will be changing.

(Incidentally, the university email ID will be valid till June 2004, so you can send me mail there till then. The faculty mail ID, unfortunately, has already expired, so I won't be posting on the fac bbs until they issue me the alum ID. Rest assured though, I've already .forward-ed the mail to another email ID, so any mail you send there wont be lost.)

  • Well done, well done :-) Now go out and earn some money!
    • Thank you! :-)

Earning... well, if it's only earning some money, then I'm already doing it :-D; developing some internal software for them. Nothing permanent (or even permanent-ish; that is, not a contract sort of a position) as yet, but the boss says I'm next in line when there's a vacancy. Won't be holding my breath for that though; the gut feeling is that the job market out here is improving rapidly.

      Anyway, let's see...

  • Unfortunately, I don't think my talents lie in academic fields.

But I wouldn't mind a career as an astroturfer *ducks*
    • Thanks!

Heheh, incidentally, one of the job openings on the university's ejobs site I applied for is that of an 'academic evangelist intern' at the local branch of the Company That Cannot Be Named On Slashdot. I'm thinking it'll be a bit like what Norman is doing there, but on a one year basis (but you would know better obviously...?) .

Must be the most evil position possible in the World's Most Evil Company. :-D

      • You talking of Don Norman? :-O

I can vaguely guess at which company you're talking about ;-)

But seriously, if you are interested in HCI, try apping to GTech's HCI programme - they're very highly ranked (within top 3) and have excellent faculty and facilities.

The downside is that you may not be left with much of a life ;-)
        • WHAT? Don Norman [jnd.org]?

I believe that you sir, have been spending too much time in your HCI lab and that you need to escape from that asap to your nearest watering hole and dunk your head in the biggest, baddest bucket of beer you can find. Don Norman indeed! Ha!

Seriously though, I was talking about a senior known to both The PeeWee Man and me who has crossed over to the Evil Side. :-D

(Like The PeeWee Man himself, I must add, who in his rejection of the One True Path, has damned himself to an eternity of stari

          • In fact, I daresay this passage will be copy-pasted to a certain .moods folder on a certain server any moment now as a further act of sacrilege. If he reads it, that is

If HCI doesn't work out, there's always that writing/journalism career the chimpanzee was mentioning.

Or would you rather be a goalkeeper? >=D

          • Hahaha! Call it an HCI mindset ;-)

Well, although the Evil Company (TM) maybe Evil, they are awesome when it comes to cool research. Particularly their Evil-Company-Name-Research.

But if you really love Industrial Research in AI and related areas (yup, HCI involves TONNES of AI stuff) - its Xerox PARC, Los Alamos National Labs, IBM TJ Watson or MS-R. Ofcourse, there are always second tier places like Bell Labs (kinda sad that they degraded, really!), HP Labs, GE and the like, but those four companies rock.
      • That job opening might be because Norman has moved on to higher things (marketing, I think) within the Company-That-Must-Not-Be-Named-For-Fear-Of-Attract ing-Slashbots (that was long, phew).

But I want to claim first dibs on it. :-P
        • Ah yes, of course.

Although, I still say it is very interesting that MS is calling for an internship and not a permanent position; guess that's the way it works these days. :-|

          • Call it a fear of commitment ;-)

The funny thing is that I have landed an internship in A-Very-Powerful-World-Organization-That-Is-Much-Fe ared-And-Shall-Not-Be-Named, and they enroll me as an employee and provide me with a job and a pay for 3 months, and put me on casual leave for the rest of the year.

Wonder why :-/ Strange practices these days.

If you teach your children to like computers and to know how to gamble then they'll always be interested in something and won't come to no real harm.
