Journal TechnoLust's Journal: Remodeling Dining Room (Japanese) and clothes shopping. 14

Ok, so I've wanted to remodel my dining room for a while, and I finally decided on Japanese, which may or may not have anything to do with her being 1/4 Japanese, but she liked the idea, so I hit Pier 1 with a ferocity today. $250 later, I have a good start on my room. I posted some pics of the room with the new stuff in it. I have a big scroll on order, and PH found a very large piece of canvas. I'm going to get him and SH to paint me a picture to go on one of the walls. They are both decent artists, and it will mean a lot to me if they paint me something. The both study Japanese culture and martial arts, so they can make something that fits in well. I saved 10% at Pier 1.

I spent about $150 in Old Navy today. I called her and asked her opinion on some clothes. I had my friends Josh and KW from church with me. She told me to let KW pick out clothes for me, since KW has great fashion sense. So KW picked out a bunch of stuff for me to try. Most of it was things I would have picked, but some of it was stuff I wouldn't have tried or colors I wouldn't have bought, but I thought it looked good. I get to see her tomorrow at church, so I'm going to wear some cargo pants and a sweater that KW picked out for me. Most of the time I was in the store, I was on the phone with her. Occasionally I would hand the phone to KW, so they could discuss colors that looked good on me. She couldn't be with us today and she knows KW and I are just friends, so she's cool with it. I saved 20% at Old Navy.

Then we went to Starbucks, and I made the mistake of having a grande caffe mocha. I haven't had caffiene in about 4 months. I went all jittery and a then developed a mild headache. The strong coffee also made my stomach feel weird. But it was really good. I went to Target and bought the Grand Theft Auto double pack for Xbox. Then we went to the liquor store because Josh wanted a flask. I bought a cool looking bottle of wine. It's a Pinot Bianco, which I've never tried. Then we watched the lunar eclipse from the parking lot. Then we hit wal-mart and couldn't find sand for the zen rock/candle garden I wanted to do for the table centerpiece. I'll have to get sand later. Then we came home and worked on the dining room. When it was done, everyone left and I played GTA. I think I spent over $500 today. Josh spent about $100 at Pier 1 and Old Navy combined and KW spent about $40 (she mostly helped me spend mine), but it was good fun and I talked to her on the cell phone about half the time, so it was almost like she was there. I miss her, I haven't been able to see her since I told her I love her, but we've talked on the phone for about 2 hours every day. Oh, I'm making her a CD, too, so if anyone has any romantic song suggestions (no country), please let me know. I'll listen to them and see if it goes with us. I have several in mind now, but I'm always open to new music.

  • Nat King Cole -- "When I Fall in Love"

I've always liked this song, especially when played at a wedding reception.

Nice dining room pics, I'm thinking of doing my living room in a Japanese style. It has a hardwood floor....not sure if I should cover it up or let it be. Guess I should decide on the final look of the room first.
  • OK, then. Sheryl Crow is my favorite artist these days. She does tend to be a little bit country-ish, but you can judge my recommendations for yourself. From her Central Park concert a few years back, she did a very nice version of "Angel", with Sarah MacLachlan. It's a bit hard to find, since it's not on the released album. You'd need to find or d/l a bootleg. If you can't find that one, Sarah's version of Angel is also a winner (I like the one on her Mirrorball album). Another good Crow song is "St
    • I love Sheryl and Sarah... thanks. I also like Whitman. I like Dylan... but I'm not a big Springsteen fan. Something about his voice I don't quite like. Doesn't make me want to tear my ears off, but I'd prefer to listen to something else. Thanks for all the great suggestions.

Her favorite song is Shawn Mullins, "lullabye". Which I have to admit I like that song, although my friends always gave me static about listening to it.

      • Just got back from Sheryl in concert [slashdot.org]; I loved it, as always. She has an amazing voice. My wife can't stand the loud guitars, so I took my daughter. Anyway, I can understand about Springsteen. How about James Taylor? I always liked Sweet Baby James, for instance. My older daughter has all of my CDs of his at school, though, so I can't really dig up any suggestions for you. Lorena McKennitt is also good, if she is into Irish/Celtic-sounding music.

      • I have "Mutineer" from the I'll Sleep When I'm Dead anthology. I had ripped the entire two-disc set to MP3s, which was fortunate because the discs were stolen from my car (20 of my favorite CDs - I no longer take my originals out of the house). I have a tape of the Letterman show where he sang it, and a digital recording of the Letterman show on September 8, when he replayed it.

I can see what you say about Zevon being an acquired taste. I've been listening to him since 1979 (college roommate had Exci

          • I'd have to figure out how to go from .MPG to .MP3; the video-editing software that I got with my ATI All-in-Wonder card is not that great. I might be able to record a good MP3 from the tape, though. The VCR that I used is stereo, but I am not sure whether or not the broadcast was.

Let me take a look and see what I can figure out. If I haven't e-mailed you in a week or so, send me an e-mail (sorry for the long time frame, but I'm up to here in things that need doing).
  • this song is great...
If There Hadn't Been You [peachpatch.com]
The link goes to a cheesy website, but it has the music and lyrics. Check it out!

So, Country's not your thing, but what about some classic stuff like this? Sam Cooke [amazon.com]
I had to buy this CD a couple of years ago! I'll spare you the details and only say..Office Christmas Party, the Lawyer I'd had my eye on all year, the last dance of the night, and Sam Cooke's "You Send Me." :)

  • a pet store for the sand ....comes in colors...we just redid the Fish tank...
  • romantic song:

Concrete and Clay [amazon.com] by Unit 4 + 2. STUPID name, but its on the Rushmore soundtrack and it KICKS ASS. It was my wedding song. We had a dance that went to it. Yeah- we kickass, too!

As for the place: I love the design, I like where you are going. My advice? 86 those chairs (too heavy, too busy) for something sleeker (or at least something sparse) and get a Shoji screen. [tatamiroom.com]
