Journal TechnoLust's Journal: Metamoderation by idiots 11

""Cracker Gains Access to 2.2 PIN NUMBERS"" from the discussion Cracker Gains Access to 2.2 Million Credit Cards which you moderated as Funny was voted Unfair

Ok, let me explain it, in case the stupid metamodder ever makes his/her way to my journal. The story was about how the cracker got CC numbers, and someone asked "Then why don't CCs have pin numbers like debit cards. So this person put the title above and the text was "you get the idea." In other words, if the can get the CC numbers, they could probably get the PIN numbers, but the metamodder didn't so much bother to read it in context and just assumed that since they were to ignorant to get it, it must not be funny. Facists. :-)

  • Most people don't even get the common-sense rules for moderation [slashdot.org]; why should they be able to figure out metamoderation?

    Feh.

    • Love the sig! :)
      • Thanks! :) The last line (which didn't fit):

Aussie: Drink anything with alcohol in it.

That's the truth. I worked with a group of Aussies back in the early 90s. It was this hard-drinking, fun bunch that introduced me to Jagermeister. Hmmmmmm... Every night after closing we would walk over to a local bar (which had 2 bottles of Jager on ice for us) and drink 'till closing (usually 3 nights a week). Man... that stuff is gooooood!

Hey! As an Aussie, I resemble that remark!

Although to be honest I won't drink anything - not a big fan of tequila, but apart from that... ;-)
  • There a lot of supposedly Funny posts that I metamod that I look at and go "Huh?" Upon further review (context) if I still don't find something funny, I M2 as Unfair.

Just because you find something funny or interesting doesn't mean that everyone else will. On the flip side, something that one person thought to be Overrated or Flamebait may not be though as such by someone else during M2 and will be raised back up, so it works both ways.

I personally find "Funny" to be the most subjective of all the ratings and tend to be a lot more critical of that.

If I see a funny mod that makes me go "Huh?", I will sometimes give it a neutral meta-mod. I rarely mod a funny post down...

Unfortunately some moderations only make sense when you view the context of the discussion. I dont think many M2ers actually view the context, so some moderations probably get unfairly M2ed fair/unfair. Some "Interesting/Informative/Insightful" mods that are obviously wrong when you view the discussion (ie, a clever troll) might seem kosher if you are only lookign at the comment in question.

Is there a better way? I don't know... For all its flaws, the moderation/M2 system seems reasonably okay to me.

Getting the job done is no excuse for not following the rules. Corollary: Following the rules will not get the job done.

Working...
