Journal TechnoLust's Journal: Tip for JE writers: Relative Links 5

I don't know if some of you aren't aware of this, or didn't know the reason you would do it, but I've seen many JEs where people link to another slashdot page (someone else's JE, a front page story, etc.) and use an absolute URL. IF you are linking to something on the same web site, instead of typing http://slashdot.org/~TechnoLust/journal/ you can type /~TechnoLust/journal/ and get the same page, but there are added bonuses to your readers. For example, I'm was gifted a subscription, so I use https://f6ffb3fa-34ce-43c1-939d-77e64deb3c0c.atarimworker.io/ When I click on a link that is hardcoded to http://slashdot.org/ it logs me out. I know others that hate the default /. color scheme, so they read everything from http://apple.slashdot.org/ or one of the other servers that has different colors. This kicks them back to the default server and colors.

Tip for JE writers: Relative Links

  • I had no idea, but that is pretty cool;-)
    • Tom mentioned it in his journal a few months back, and I thought "Meh, handy for the sig character limit, that's about it.", and promptly forgot about it. Now that you've mentioned the http(s) thing, I will try and be diligent about this in the future.
  • But I frankly have to admit that I don't link that way to pages internal on slashdot. Why? Simple: lazyness.... You see, it's easier to just copy/paste an address that you want to post than to copy/paste/edit. I know, I know, it's not much more work, but I have to think about it. :-/

  • like others said, nifty and thanks for the info.

  • I mean, if all these links are relatives, won't they start getting inbred?
