Journal TechnoLust's Journal: *NEW* Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS 15

SlashChick and I were in Target to get her a hairdryer* and she wanted to go look at Nintendo DS games. She found the *NEW* Super Mario Bros for DS and bought it. I apparently have been living under a rock, as I hadn't heard of it. So I played her copy and it was great, so we went back and I purchased my own copy. So we've been playing the 2 player mode and the mini games. The mini games alone would be worth the purchase, but the single player stuff is great too. The best way I can describe it is the first Super Mario Bros. (the NES one) rewritten to take advantage of the features of the DS. The gameplay is the same addictive style that hooked me on the Mario series, but there are new powerups and moves and things. The graphics are better of course, but it's a side scroller like the original. It's like they took the nostalgia and polished it up, added a few things and packaged it. When I first started playing it, several times I would laugh because the music was reminiscent of the original, or a "remix" of it.

SlashChick is hooked on the 2player Vs mode. I think she just likes jumping on me** and stealing my stars. The minigames are very WarioWare-esque. There are some card games and some matching and things, but they are fun. There's one where Yoshi has balloons tied to him and you have to blow on the mic to make him float up and you dodge to enemies that are flying around to get him safely to the top. Oh, and there is a whack-a-mole too. :-) And there's DS download for your friends that don't have it. I think this is a must own for anyone with a DS that loved the Mario series.

*Long story, ask her if you want to know.
**My CHARACTER in the game, ya perv. ;-)

  • You own a DS and have not heard of *new* super mario bros?

I would also imagine that you're not all that caught up on general console news then. Yea, sony is dead, long live the Wii. And stuff.
    • Just wait... I have a feeling this can come true if sony doesn't get its head outta its rear...
      • Well, they're up against the strongest launch lineup I've ever seen(the Wii has something like 10 titles I *want*[1] coming out at or around launch, not including the virtual console, this versus 20-something I bought over the entire 5 year life of the cube and 30-something over the life of the PS2), with nothing really to counter it(Neither MGS4, FF:VIII or Assassin's creed are launch titles), and a price tag greater than my first car.

About the only thing I can think of that Sony can do is drop $100-$200 o

    That is all.

  • I was reading someone else's blog who said that while the game was fun, it didn't take very long at all to completely finish everything you could possibly do. He didn't say how long he spent playing it, but insinuated that there wasn't an enormous amount of stuff to do.

I've actually been contemplating getting a DS Lite after they come out. I've never owned a handheld game before (not counting my Palm Pilot games) but the DS seems very compelling.
    • I haven't beaten it yet. But I've only had it 2 days, and most of that time has been spent playing 2 player with SC.

This is my first handheld also. (Not counting Zaurus games.)

  • I bought this when it came out for a business trip. I must really suck, because I still haven't beaten it and I've played it a plenty. There were complaints that it was too easy to get all the way thruogh and unlock everything, but not for old (30 years) gamers like me that don't have l337 skills. Anyone who has a DS MUST BUY THIS GAME.

    Love it.

Though I haven't had time to play it since my vacation ended. :(

The DS is great and the fact that I haven't had time to play the game points clearly in the direction that I don't need to be buying a 360.
