Journal TechnoLust's Journal: Job update (for robi and the others that have asked) 8

I thought I JE'd this already, but with all that's been going on, maybe I didn't. Or maybe I wrote it and hit preview and then was distracted and forgot to hit submit, since it seems to take about 5 minutes for slashdot to make a preview of journals for me. AnyTL... (ok, doesn't work as well as it does for ellem.)

The Cincinnati company that FortKnox works for sent me an offer to join the Java group. When I first started talking to them they asked me how much salary I was looking at getting. I said between [lowest I would take] and [what I hoped to get but doubted they would offer]. They gave me the top of my range. I asked about getting 3 weeks of vacation, but they gave me 2 weeks. However, since I have a cruise in October that I've already paid for, he said they would give me 7 days already accrued for that and then let me accrue at the normal rate of 2 weeks/year. That's satisfactory. I signed the employment agreement and the employee handbook and the offer letter and mailed it back last Friday.

We are still working on relocation package details, since they've never hired anyone from out of the area before. They told me to come up with the details and an estimate and they would approve it if it seemed reasonable. So I found some websites and found what appears to be the standard package and got estimates and emailed it to them. They are supposed to meet on it today and let me know if it's ok. Also, I might be moving to Columbus for 3-6 months first, and they said they'd pay for my housing while I was there, and then I could look for permanent housing in Cincy while I was in Columbus. So not only will I save housing for 3-6 months, I won't have to hurry to find something in Cincy. I can take my time and find what I want.

Basically we are waiting on a client that is in need of my skillz. We expect sometime in August. I'm really excited about starting this job. I'm going to go in there and work my tail off. I have been slacking at my current job because I hate it and I have no reason to work hard, since it goes unnoticed and unrewarded. I believe this will not be the case at my new employer, I beleive they DO reward performance and I will give them my very best. I can feel the excitement fueling my desire to work hard, and I haven't even started yet. I want to do such a good job that they promote me for being so good and Josh for being smart enough to recommend me. :-)

  • when you get here, maybe sometime we'll do lunch. You don't know me but I lurk the Je's all the time. ;)
    • I have you friended, so I guess I've seen you say something somewhere that I agreed with. Yeah, we can definitely meet for lunch. If you want, FortKnox might come along too.
  • I think I could work 110 hours this week or go sit in the park and nobody would notice. Unfortunately I feel compelled to do a lot of hard work and get no reward. The joys of working for a mega-corp.
  • Great news and thanks for answering just for me and the "others". I feel your situation regarding the slacking.... I have 3 weeks and 3 days of work left (max) until my products are off to manufacturing, so lets just say that the will to work is low.... But if I continue working hard they may decide to keep me with the SW developers I support. Who knows....

In any case, I found out that Boise PD, Nampa PD, and Meridian PD won't announce any new hires until September 15th at the earliest, so I have two mo
  • You must report fully what the present employers (esp. your old manager) say when you give them the X weeks notice.
  • That's all.
