What Do You Use. A Poll.

  • I'd have to say ctrl-esc if ever I diverted from my mouse loving.
  • But not normally by itself. windows-D or windows-M to get to the desktop. I also use windows, U, U to shut off my home PC, and windows, U, Enter to restart my work PC. I never use the windows key just to pull up the Start menu. I use the mouse if I'm doing anything there.
  • If I was forced to use windows I'd say ctrl-esc. But I'm typically mac-bound I'f I'm using a GUI at all.
  • i haven't used ctrl-esc since OS/2. :)

i use the windows key for everything:

    win-e: explorer
    win-d: desktop
win-f: search (crappy as that is in windoze)
    win-l: lock desktop
    win-r: run
    win-m: minimize

    it's handy, i must admit.
    • Usually I just turn it off and on and try again. You know like if I want to open Notepad.exe... I turn the computer off then boot it up and try to open the program. Id Outlook tells me I have mail I turn off the computer then boot back up and try to see it.

I am a unix weenie, so I just pop open a "dos window" and type them all in baby! I am not sure what that little box is next to the keyboard, some kind of weird replacement for the tab key I think.....
  • ... but only because my fingers are used to the combination due to Ctrl-Esc bringing up the Process Manager in KDE.

Otherwise, I'd just use the mouse.

However, I almost never use the Start Menu - I have QuickToolbar shortcuts set up for JDeveloper, Visual Source Safe, Visual Studio.NET 2003, Mozilla Firefox (though I prefer Opera and use Opera at home), MS Outlook, and a command prompt, and in a typical workday, I'll only ever need a few.

Most often used: The command prompt, using it to launch gVim on so

  • I use the Windows key in conjunction with z, x, c, v and b.
That's last track, play, pause, stop and next track for amaroK.

I don't think the Windows key has any functionality in Fluxbox.

  • Somehow I missed that memo - I've used the Windows key for as long as I've used Windows. Before Windows I had only ever worked in DOS, BASIC, and FORTRAN. I never knew Ctrl+Esc did the same thing.

Killed a few too many mice over the years and am VERY good at navigating programs and desktops with only a keyboard, so Alt, Windows key, menu key, and such are intrinsic parts of my repertoire.

    • Ctrl-Esc brought up the task list in Windows 3.1. I didn't have a Windows Key on my keyboard for years, even after Windows 95 came out.

I never use the Windows Key.
  • I use <Ctrl>+<Esc> to bring up the main menu, because that works on all keyboards. My laptop at work doesn't have a <Windows> key, so I changed my habit to match that.

But sometimes, I just have to minimize all windows at once. Gotta use <Windows>+m

  • Because I can't be arsed to stretch my hand across the keyboard for no good reason. (And yes, Ctrl-Alt-Del is the only good reason for abusing your hands that way...)

    -MT.
  • I do Ctrl-Esc on occasion, but I do use the Windows-combo keys (D,E,F,L,M). I also use Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the Task Manager on my less-than-stable work computer.

I never knew about Ctrl-Esc until I read this JE.

In case of atomic attack, all work rules will be temporarily suspended.
