Storm Damage

We got blasted last night by heavy winds and rain, and I inspected the house this morning for signs of damage. The only damage I could find was to the makeshift awning which is protecting my wife's outside rat cages. It took a beating, and I shored it up as best I could. The rats were fine.

On a whim, I grabbed my camera on the way out, and snapped some pictures. They are now on display on my web site, with more hopefully on the way.

I apologize for the crudity of the image gallery interface. I wrote it myself a few years ago, and haven't really put much time into making it better. I looked at some other cgi's for doing the same sort of thing, but what I was really looking for was a way to make many functional galleries in a short period of time, with a relative few keystrokes. In that regard, it does quite well. All that is necessary is to put images into a directory (that's a "folder" for all you windows users), create a blurbs.txt file for that directgory, and then make up a link pointing the cgi at the directory.

Someday I'll fix it up some more. I've noticed that other gallery interfaces make an html page for each image, with links for the "next" and "previous" images in the gallery. That's a nice feature, but I'm not sure when I'll make the time to write it up.

Unlike most of my other software, I'm not open-sourcing it (though I do give it out to friends who ask for it), mostly because the code is ugly and hackish, depends on the presence of some nonstandard utilities, and probably has a number of security holes which I don't want anyone exploiting.

  • Last I looked at the code, I was still trying to figure out how to make an array, or why it was important... :P Obviously I didn't get any farther than, "TTK... This makes my brain hurt..."
Perhaps when I'm done with my final project for my perl class, I'll poke at it again.
  • Glad that the storm didn't cause too much trouble, and you guys are alright. Cute place, btw.
