Professors should make a big deal about if they AI the homework, they probably won't pass the tests. The real math majors probably won't use AI at all because the subject and challenge interests them; it's the education, cs, other majors that will try to skip it.

Personally, I did horrible in math in undergrad; so bad I had to retake Linear Algebra in grad school (undergrad version) and make a B or higher to continue grad school (did not affect GPA). So this time, whenever I learned a new thing, I added it to a Matrix library I was writing first, THEN I did the homework. Figuring out how to do it programmatically made a massive difference! I made As and Bs on every quiz and test thanks to that method.

What is writing? We write things down to communicate to others AND ORGANIZE OUR THOUGHTS. The fact that most humans can read/write their own language in the western world is VERY RECENT. Go back two thousand years or so and literacy rates were somewhere between 2%~5% is a lot of the world (I've looked up a bunch of stuff on this and no one can agree on a number. I think it might actually be closer to 10%, with just a lot of writing not surviving since paper disintegrates and wax tablets melt). And by the 1600s, a majority of people in the colonies could go to their local church and read a bible.

Writing your own words is a form of thinking and organization and it's a critical human skill people need to stop outsourcing to the predictive text generator.

I answered elsewhere in the thread. That one woman who sued because Getty went after people who used her public domain photos: Getty shouldn't have gone after them (they could have refused and won) but the lawyer mentioned that Getty also added value by adding tags and search functionality to find those photos. At the same time, the original photographer gave up her rights (I think in the 60s?) by making the photos public domain, so she didn't really have a claim for losses, even though she was just trying to protect people who were being contacted by Getty for using her public domain work.

There needed to be flags on the assets indicating they were public domain so enforcers could just ignore those, but I'm not sure if that idea ever got implemented.

They ingested some public domain photos and then went after people who used them, including the girl who released her photos as public domain. She lost her case because she had given up her license (long ago, before the days of the Creative Commons, which may have helped her). Getty should NOT have gone after people who used public domain photos, but a lawyer I talked to said Getty did add value in some ways by adding tags and search. There was some talk of adding license information to each asset so the enforcement teams wouldn't go after stuff that was imported from the public domain, but I don't know if that was ever implemented. I worked for GettyImages for a year and a half on their asset management team doing Scala development in Seattle. It was honestly one of the most technologically advanced teams and companies I had ever worked with. If they decided to move from platform x to y, it would be done in 3 months, where other shops would take three years. All our services had full unit tests. We confidently pushed out releases and breakage/outages were rare. The platform team was 11 people and they were all amazing; able to roll out incredibly well designed changes in weeks long before the LLM era.

There was still tech debt in the company (I was tasked with fixing someone's shitty 1,000 line Perl script because there was a whiny little bitch on another team who refused to point to our new thumbnail server cluster which did everything their shitty script did, but in real time). But overall, the tech debt was far lower than any other place. We had a Principal Engineer who gave up a job at NASA to work at Getty.

I did have trouble with some of their copyright trolling issues, but even the lawyers I talked to there had some interesting arguments for various court cases I brought up, which really made me think.
