According to this article mass shootings have been more common since the 1960s. Interestingly, the weapons that can be used for effective mass shootings have really only been available since.... the 1960s.

While the availablity of semiauto firearms almost certainly plays some role in these things, I don't think the evidence is there - even in the article you link - to support the idea that it's a decisive or even a major factor.

Also the Interstates made travel easy, and TV and the Internet have made communications, and thus mass media, pervasive. 200 years ago, a mass murderer, if discovered at all, probably wouldn't have made it past the local headlines
