In response to eglamkowski's journal entry.
There is a simple reason why I support Democrats. Democrats are, at this point in history, inherently less corrupt than Republicans. Democrats are politicians. They are Third Way centrists. Democrats are not beholden to religious idealists and fanatics. They are better for the country as a result. Countries run by fanatics and enthusiasts do not long endure.
Democrats are less likely to offer ill-conceived amendments. They do not propose wars without sufficient justification. Democrats do not cut taxes for the ultra-rich to prove that they have good economic policies. Democrats do not propose changing a two hundred year old judiciary when it rules against them.
Democrats are the true Conservatives of America. They practice liberalism - the idea that Americans can make the best choices for themselves - something that Republicans do not believe. Democrats are not responsible for oppressive laws like USA PATRIOT. Democrats are fiscal conservatives, believing in a balanced budget and making it happen.
Democrats react appropriately to world events. Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Speak softly, but carry a big stick." Republicans have not supported their allies or asked European permission to do anything for three decades, even when there was no reason not to. Might does make right, but a little bit of humility goes a very long way.
Democrats do not immediately squander resources, whether international good will, ANWR, or a budget surplus. This goes back to not being idealists. Democrats do not necessarily believe that they are right or that their quest is ultimately important enough to tap all available resources.
Along with this, Democrats do not believe Republicans to be the enemy. They do not call police on Republicans in the House of Representatives. Democrats do not threaten to change 200 years of tradition in response to a filibuster. Democrats do not gerrymander districts, denying people representation to further their political goals. These are the tactics of fanatics, of enthusiasts.
The Democratic party is not perfectly moral. It has a level of corruption. But it is a lower level than that of the Republicans. Democrats are not directly taking bribes. Democrats are not soliciting boys for sex, and then covering it up. The moral distinction is clear and understood by the American people.
Ultimately, each of us needs to decide whether or not we want enthusiasts leading our country. The American people decided that, in this election, the Republicans have gone entirely too far. Quite wisely, they "voted the bums out." They have moved away from extremism.
The Republicans did not lose. The American people decided that they want a more moderate government. They want the safety and benefits of a government that does not know best. They wanted to eliminate the social nanny state that the Republicans were creating. Ultimately, the American people want Freedom. And the Democrats were the party peddling that commodity this time around.
