Funny. But it's the wrong way to look at it. We just want what should be ours anyway. You don't think "I get to use my own bed for free! I get to use my own oven for free!" do you? That we want to use our own stuff "for free" is just backwards thinking.
Whatever disaster that hits Earth/human population will have to wipe out at least 99.9999999% of us, otherwise the population will recover. Killing more than that would mean that there is a risk that the survivors won't find each other and have sex. I find it hard to conceive of such an event that does not also wipe out all of life on Earth. We are remarkably wide-spread and adaptable - we evolved to be that way.
