Journal SolemnDragon's Journal: There and back again- ER visit 23

i'm all right.

My eyes were swelling this morning to the point where they were half-shut. We went to the ER because if it got worse that would be a real problem. They're still swollen, while we wait for the predisone to kick in, but there's a LOT of benadryl in me to at least try to stop it from happening more right now.

Needless to say, i called in sick.

We don't know what it's a reaction to, we don't know what's going on, all we know is that i need to be damned careful from here on out, because it could be something i touched, something i ate, one of my meds, we don't know.

i'm fine, camping out and watching some movies for the day.

Happy friday. At least we live in an age of medicine and urgent care, and my identity isn't wrapped up in my looks so much that this derails it.

  • If so, then make sure that you understand what rights and benefits you have for on-the-job injuries.
  • I suggest giving him a good delousing and making him wear a barrel around the house in case its any of his 'straight-edge' ways that's making you have these horrific reactions.

Seriously though, I hope you find the culprit soon, and I hope like hell that it isn't blinder.
  • i'm sorry and FUCK THE ALLERGEN. FUCK IT TO HELL (or is that 'dammit'?)!!! Whatever it is. I hates it.

I'm very sorry Sol and hope you have a restful, pleasant day regardless. Bah. I feel so freaking frustrated for you!

what are ya gonna watch? Can I watch too?

Here comes a random story for no particular reason :-)

When I was 12, instead of my normal springtime allergy attack, I got a case of Giant Urticaria. Yes, urticaria means hives but these were special. They grew and spread and melded into one another until my entire body was uniformly swollen from head to foot. My face was completely disfigured -- it freaked out visitors. IIRC, there was also concern about (the possibility of?) internal organs being swollen. The main thing I remember is how overjoyed the phy
    • Yup. Worst thing to happen during a visit to a doctor is when they say "Hold on, I want to show you to a colleague."

Or go to a uni hospital and they say "you would make a GREAT teaching case."

      • in my case, the ER doc said, "Oh, you're Rheumatologist is Dr. K-? He's great. Tell him i said hi."

We had a nice talk about the merits of my RH doc, who really is one of the best docs i've ever met, and humble as hell, and the truth is, any doctor i've gone to that he's recommended has been equally helpful and genuine. And so was the ER doc.
        • I've had reactions to crap but nothing like what you're going through.

As good as your rheumatologist is, you shouldn't be waiting (or have to) for two weeks to see him. This could be life-threatening and you need his services pronto.

"Hold on, I want to show you to a colleague."

"Hold on, I want to show you a law called HIPAA." It will make them pause.
        • Negative. Blanket defense in that sort of instance is asking for a consult. If within the same practice or setting, there is ZERO chance for a successful HIPAA complaint.
      • Or go to a uni hospital and they say "you would make a GREAT teaching case."

Oh, I don't know, it wasn't that bad... I was at a doc one time for "spots all over", and he asked if he could bring some of his students in to see my spots because they were... um, I think "interesting" was the word he used.

So I sat there mostly naked while three young med students tried to guess what made *my* spots special. It took them about six tries, and after each guess the doctor had a brief discussion about why that par

  • I'm glad someone was around to take you to the ER, though. That sort of reaction has to be documented.

A few years ago, my pastor had a sudden case of being allergic to everything. Did not have any allergies at all, and then inadvertantly inhaled some new carpet fumes, and voila! Instant multiple chemical sensitivities. Her eyes and face swelled in a manner similar to what you're describing. She started reacting to foods, smells, all kinds of things. Finally, the reaction just sort of wore itself out and she
