Back in the 90s I was sysadmin for about 16 Sun workstations. I was supposed to do this in my spare time, worked out to 10-20 hours a week. I tried to get offsite backup but management refused to either pay for the tapes or a company to store them. So I managed the tapes such that I did a nightly partial backup, a weekly full backup, and every month I took a weekly tape home.

They laid me off, saying I couldn't meet deadlines reliably. By the same guy that had a habit of giving me sysadmin work when I was busy with "real" work on a tight deadline.

Sure enough, 3-4 months later I get a phone call. Seems their new sysadmin, a person who didn't know squat about Unix nor backups but did it in their spare time, had managed to lose the source code. She knew I'd been taking monthly backups home and asked if I still had the tapes. I looked at my bookcase with a couple months of backups and said "nope, I threw them away".

They've got long hours because there aren't enough controllers. If they can get the number of controllers up where it should be they can work 40 hours, or possibly even 30.

I guess that rules surgical robots right out.

They added a bunch of shit I don't care about, and made the damn thing slower than snail snot on Valium in winter to boot. It also seems to have started streaming the Roku channel when I think it's turned off. Several times I've turned it on only to see a movie streaming.

How's that "let's not let anyone sell advanced chips to China" working out for you? From where I sit it looks like not so well.

Bash, Makefiles, and Perl are things I got really good at 3-4 times in my career, only to forget how to use them until the next time I needed them several years later.

I don't even know what MongoDB is but, thanks to Slashdot, I have a very negative opinion of it.
