Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: Thoughts and Prayers... 19

One of my wife's very good friends from high School has a very sick little girl. She's been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, which means that she currently has next to no immune system. So she is vulnerable to a wide range of infections, even from bacteria that is otherwise beneficial. As I understand it, and this may be too graphic for some, she currently has an infection in her intestines which breached one of the intestinal walls. This leaked fluid into her torso which has been causing her breathing difficulties. The normal treatment is to drain the fluid, find the hole, and surgically repair it. Since she has no immune ystem though, any type of incision is extremly risky because of the chance of later infection.

Finally over the weekend they had no choice and began draining her abdomain. She's 9, weighs ~60lbs, and they have already drained over a gallon of fluids from her. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be enough yet, and she has already stopped breathing twice. So the next step is to drain directly from her chest and do whatever they can to mitigate the risk of infection. She's in the ICU now, and any prayers or positive thoughts you could send to her and her family would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

May God give grace and peace to this little girl and heal her body. May he also comfort her parents, help them to care for their child, and encourage them.
  • It just breaks your heart to see little children suffer like this. I remember holding my nephew with wires coming out of his chest shortly after heart surgery as a newborn. I believe in miracles. And like others here, I will say some prayers for this young child and parents.
    • Thank you for that. How is your nephew doing? its hard enough with a 9 year old, I can hardly imagine with a new born.
      • My nephew is healthy as a kicking mule today. I guess I forgot to mention that heart operation was over 10 years ago.

The lasting memory etched into my mind is holding him as a newborn. Tears would trickle down his face. He had screamed for so many days that he had lost his voice and just the escaping sound of air could be heard. He looked like a puckering fish out of water. Poor little booger. He's quite proud of his zipper across his chest today. He's a funny, energetic child.

I won't stop praying for your
        • I am glad to hear that your nephew is a strong, healthy kid, and we really do appraciate the prayers. I'll find out later today if she's been released from ICU or not, but she was doing much better last night, so thank you again.

Little kids don't need that sort of grief. Prayers sent, and I ran a search at eurekalert and found this [eurekalert.org], it appears to have something to do with bone marrow, and they have both a chemotherapy treatment and a stem cell treatment, which might be better and certainly less of a shock to an already weakened person.
    • She had been responding fairly well to one of the chemical treatments. I don't know whether she has the version in which her marrow simply stopped producing or the one in which her white blood cells attacked it. If the chemical approach doesn't work then they'll move onto the bone marrow option. Because of this I will likely be going down soon and registering with the bone marrow donation folks. If there's a match the procedure hurts for a few days, but you can certainly help someone a lot.

And I hope the prognosis tends toward the positive that the Wikipedia article suggests:

    • Thank you. if she gets through this her prognosis from the Aplastic Anemia is pretty good. The worry right now is infection. She was doing better as of last night, though, but she's not out of the woods yet.
  • And will be continued, too.
    • Thanks. She was actually talking a bit last night, so while she's not out of the woods yet, but she's going down the right path.
  • Goodthoughts going out her way!
