Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: The Power of Weeding.... 10

We've been doing a committed effort to clean up our house and yard. Inside we are de-cluttering and organizing, outside, we're pulling weeds, working on the yard, and putting a lot of effort into the plants. There's a corner of the house that over the years has been consistently skipped when it comes to weeding. Its a pain to get the weeds out and its not that noticeable. As part of our campaign though, it was time to rip them out.

So as I pulled and pulled and pulled, I started noticing just how extensive of an ecosystem had developed amongst those weeds. Dozens of spiders and insects were scrambling around as their cover was pulled out of the ground. I stopped for a second and thought, I'm destroying an entire, tiny ecosystem simply for for my own selfish reasons. As I pondered more and realized that I simply had no compassion for their plight, I couldn't help but think, So this is what its like to be Dick Cheney.

    "As I pondered more"

Dickhead Cheney wouldn't have thought twice ... :-)

    • I'm dissappointed in you Tom, there's no link in your reply;-) BTW, I had an idea for the top picture on the contenders page. Label the pole "Vista" and the other "Customer." Then post it to a domain with a variant spelling of some software company somewhere...
  • I first read this as "The Power of Weed", and then I was waiting for you to say you had a serendipitous discovery of a huge marijuana plant in your yard...

Anyway, moving swiftly on. In my garden, I planted a couple of mallow plants (so I had something that actually flowered). They were small last year, but they seem to do really well when it rains, and they have grown to enormous proportions. People go on about a dearth of bees, but I've seen _loads_ of bees thanks to these plants, which are covered in flow
    • Its pretty cool watching nature go to work. You create a little bit of space, some clean water, and BAM, instant ecosystem. Or, in my case, a 4' x 4' area that hadn't been touched in 3 years;-)

Dick Cheney would have shot them in the face.
  • This week we've rented a dumpster to dispose of the construction debris we've built up over the past year. Yesterday I picked up a piece of paneling that was leaning up against the carport. It startled 3 large (8+ inch) lizards and as many little lizards, 7 or 8 toads of various sizes, and lots of little bugs--including one giant black ant with violently red velvety patches.
    • So, what you're saying is, you had a Lizard's Thicket in your own backyard;-)

That's quite a lot of good size fauna to be mooching off of you. Kinda makes you wonder where they're now living, doesn't it? As for the ant, I have never heard of such a coloring. Maybe its a hybrid carpenter/fire ant. They eat through your house and then you;-)

Here it seems that our yard has bexcome home to earwigs above all. Hateful little hellspawns.

As Will Rogers would have said, "There is no such things as a free variable."
