While is true that setting this up in an old distro is impossible, modern DE's (and Modern versions of the Xorg server) can handle it, yes, it's tricky to set it up, but not impossible. OTOH, if you're using Wayland, and a Wayland capable DE this works with minimum effort. (and here's were you can argue driver support, particularly from NVIDIA) Of course, apps running in XWayland will look blurry if scaled on HiDPI, to our regret, replacing native X apps is a slow process. TL/DR: 4k monitors are not the norm in the rest of the world.

A bit hyperbolic, yes, but non-compete clauses are really a kind of indentured servitude or slavery. You either work for Company X, or you can't work for anyone in the field for a period of time that will make sure your skills are out of date and you're essentially unhirable. They are fundamentally in opposition to the founding principles of the United States and the federal government should follow the lead of states like California in abolishing them completely.

As long as the guy isn't bringing with him a bunch of proprietary info, just his skills, I don't give two shits if Amazon is pissed. Clearly the guy wasn't happy at Amazon or he wouldn't have been looking for another job, so maybe instead of using non-competes to force people to stay, Amazon should try to fix the culture and environment of its workplace so people don't want to leave. A novel idea, I know, and I have serious doubts that anyone in upper management at Amazon has the necessary level of introspection to even consider this option, but maybe with a little push from federal courts ruling non-compete clauses unenforceable...

Indeed, wish i had enough mod points.

This system was hacked years ago by a handful of teenagers trying to get more minutes on their public phone calling cards (when Cellphones were not as popular as they're today) The method was exactly the same, strip an already used card of the circuit logic and file it so it fitted alongside a good card, this made the phone charge the funds but not update the remaining funds on the good card, rinse-and-repeat. Chip and PIN is of course, not secure, but at least it beats (if by little) the CHIPless cards that are way easier and cheaper to clone.

The Future of OpenSolaris Revealed 342

ywlke writes "A few hours ago, an internal Oracle memo was leaked to the osol-discuss mailing list at opensolaris.org. It details Oracle's plans for Solaris and OpenSolaris; namely that OpenSolaris, the distribution, is dead. Solaris Express has come back from the grave, and source code will still be CDDL, but won't be released to the public until some time after it is incorporated into a binary release. What happens to the community now is anybody's guess." The full text of the memo is available on the mailing list, as well as apparent confirmation from an Oracle employee. That said, no official announcement has yet been made.

The Struggle For Private Game Servers 125

A story at the BBC takes a look at the use of private game servers for games that tend not to allow them. While most gamers are happy to let companies like Blizzard and NCSoft administer the servers that host their MMORPGs, others want different rules, a cheaper way to play, or the technical challenge of setting up their own. A South African player called Hendrick put up his own WoW server because the game "wasn't available in the country at the time." A 21-year-old Swede created a server called Epilogue, which "had strict codes of conduct and rules, as well as a high degree of customized content (such as new currency, methods of earning experience, the ability to construct buildings and hire non-player characters, plus 'permanent' player death) unavailable in the retail version of the game." The game companies make an effort to quash these servers when they can, though it's frequently more trouble that it's worth. An NCSoft representative referenced the "growing menace" of IP theft, and a Blizzard spokesperson said,"We also have a responsibility to our players to ensure the integrity and reliability of their World of Warcraft gaming experience and that responsibility compels us to protect our rights."

AMD

Submission + - Is AMD dead yet?

TheProcess writes: Back in February 2003, IBM predicted that AMD would be dead in 5 years (original article here), with IBM and Intel being the only remaining players in the chip market. Well, 5 years have come and gone, and AMD is still alive. However, its finances and stock price have taken a serious beating over the last year. AMD was once a /. darling; the plucky, up-and-coming challenger to the Intel behemoth. Do you think AMD will be here in 5 years? Can they pose a credible competitive threat to Intel's dominance? Do they still have the superior, but unappreciated technology, or are they finally old hat? Can they really recover?

I have placed a lot of orders trough google checkout, and i live outside the US.

I had no problem so far, very fast and secure.

I have one complaint. tracking numbers have to be get by phone when you select to protect spam from the seller (as in google receives the store's email to you so they can filter it.)

The only catch is to have an US physical address to get shipments , but your billing adress can be an international one, the one linked to the credit card for example, you can even pay with an non-US Credit Card, wich is nice because paypal sucks badly and freezes accounts for no reason, but i assume you all know that.
