Two-dollar pound looms

With the a two-dollar pound tantalisingly close, Britons are rushing to book flights across the pond to get in quick cut-price shopping sprees.

Thanks to another rally this morning the pound pushed to $1.9939 at one point - its highest level since September 1992.

Currency experts say the magic number of both the financial and retail worlds - $2 - could be hit as soon as today. The pound has not been that strong against the dollar for 15 years.

  • I moved to the UK in '90 - so my NA currency was useless.
I moved back west in '97 - when the pound was worthless.

    So it goes, eh?
  • I visited England in the sumemr of 1991, at which point the pound was essentially twice the dollar. It didn't mean as much at the time except it made conversions easier. Since then, since I don't really keep up on such things, I have always simply assumed that the pound is still twice the dollar;-)
  • if only I could convert my excess pounds to dollars.
