Submission + - U.S. students suffering from Internet addiction (reuters.com)

PsiCTO writes: (Reuters) — Crackberry is no joke.

American college students are hooked on cellphones, social media and the Internet and showing symptoms similar to drug and alcohol addictions, according to a new study.

This probably falls under the no-big-surprise category. CBC Radio 1 played a couple of interviews with students that took part in the study. I especially liked the quote in which the student felt like he had a phantom limb experience with his cell phone.

Submission + - Canada's CRTC considers Cdn content on Internet

PsiCTO writes: Heard on the CBC this morning and found a story at the Winnipeg Sun's online site saying that the CRTC [is] to weigh Internet content regulation. The CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission) is akin to the FCC. They get that they can't "regulate" the Internet, but are proposing to promote additional Canadian content in some way. Likely they will discuss tax credits, subsidies, grants, or other traditional mechanisms. What do people think about this? Are there similar efforts, existing or proposed, in other countries?
