Charter is petitioning the FCC to release them from the 7-year "no data cap agreement" agreed to in the Time Warner merger. One released Charter would implement data caps and start charging interconnect fees for networks serving up streaming video kicking off another net neutrality war. This move is clearly aimed at cord cutters who are streaming video and also to exploit the COVID-19 crisis for profit as Americans are dependent on the broadband monopoly for work and school.
The FCC is seeking public comment:

You can read some of the early current comment filings here:

Side note: Ajit at the FCC already let Charter weasel out of the first merger condition which was to provide competition in areas served by other ISPs. However, Ajit being a industry insider determined that competition was bad for the corporations and that monopolies are much more profitable.
Please comment.

Can SpaceX's Starlink deliver less than 100ms latency? That is the $16 Billion dollar question as the FCC looks to pump more money into rural broadband. Will rural America ever get broadboand? What will America get for giving billions of dollars to incumbent providers? Is this all just FUD or a publicity stunt by the FCC to stop states from building out their own networks? Will American's continue to pay the highest prices on earth for broadband?. Will broadband and Internet access ever be considered a human right. So many questions, so few answers. Stay tuned.

Fiber Internet is coming to Traverse City Michigan in the hopes of attracting high tech startups and helping the city become a high-tech hub. Even in the face of intense lobbying by Charter, The Mackinaw Center for Public Policy, and a barrage of pop up ads opposing it, the project is moving ahead into phase one. It was more than apparent that Charter did everything in it could to try and sow fear, uncertainty, and doubt to try and kill this project as other incumbent providers have done across the USA. Kudos to the board of Traverse City Light and Power and the residents of Traverse City for being brave and making this investment in their community. Even though the decision is not finalized, the network may be an open network, allowing customers to purchase from a variety of providers. This project will undoubtedly be watched nationwide and possibly serve as a new model for other community fiber builds.

Apple wants Siri to become more useful to users when not connected to the internet, including the possibility of an offline mode that does not rely on a backend server to assist with voice recognition or performing the required task, one that would be entirely performed on the user's device.
Just give it 10-years and everything old is new again. Siri will join the ranks of Ford/Microsoft Sync and Intel Edison. Do any other phones/cars/speakers have this option right now?

As technologists, developers, and programmers it is essential to keep moving forward as technology advances so that we do not find ourselves pigeonholed, irrelevant, or worse unemployed. If you had to choose a new technology skill to add to your personal inventory this summer what would it be and why? Also, where would you look for the best online training (iTunesU, Lynda.com)? The technologies that immediate jump out as useful are HTML5, XCODE, and AJAX. Thank you for sharing.

Fellow Slashdotters. I have transitioned to teaching and my students have asked me what is the best path to take to work in the video game programming industry. Which would be of more benefit, pursing a Computer Science Degree or taking an accelerated program like those at FullSail? I have a CS degree and suspect that the CS degree would be of more benefit in the long run, but I would like anyone in the industry to share their wisdom and experience with my students trying to follow in your footsteps. If you could recommend some programs in your replies it would be appreciated.

In the past two-weeks AT&T sent out disconnect letters to VOIP customers in big rude red letters, stating that VOIP service would be suspended in 30-days and permanently disconnected in 60-days. AT&T cited E911 service as the reason. Many AT&T VOIP customers have found that they are unable to transfer their AT&T VOIP phone numbers to a new provider. Further, AT&T is unwilling to provide a forwarding message directing callers to a new phone number for those that are unable to transfer their old AT&T VOIP phone numbers. In effect, AT&T has told many long-term VOIP subscribers, we are turning off your phone in 30-days, goodbye, and good luck. AT&T does not appear a corporation that values customer loyalty, especially of those who hung on during the experimental days of the AT&T VOIP service
Many longterm subscribers are extremely upset at the AT&T cold shoulder and short notice. It is also interesting AT&T is unable overcome this E911 technical hurdle, since AT&T is also the local landline company (SBC/AT&T) in many areas where VOIP cancellation notices are being received.
