Comment Naming conventions (Score 2) 722

At my current job, its domain/sitecode/type/### (e.g DKLWNAVMH200). The three digit number corresponds to what its purpose is - e.g. servers in the 100 range are email servers, 200 = file/print, 300 = citrix, etc. Its nice having a decent convention

Previous places of employments used sitecode/windowsedition/###. It was pain in the ass when they switched to 2k3 and 2k8 but didnt update the naming convention to cope (it was written when 2000 server was king). The windows edition was specified as '2K', which could mean 2000,2003,2008. That coupled with the numbers having no significance other than incrementing with each new server rendered it useless.

Another used planet names (not an issue as long as you dont have many servers).

My own PCs/Servers use stone/mineral names e.g. Obsidian, Amethyst, Malachite, etc

The same person made a similar claim in 1998, stating that the Rapture would occur followed by Armageddon. Of course nothing happened. He selectively chooses which verses that supports such claims and ignores ones that point out that no-one bar God knows when it will happen:

  • Matthew 24:36: No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
  • Matthew 24:42: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
  • Matthew 25:13: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
  • Mark 13:32-33: No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
  • Mark 13:35: Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back–whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.

There are other conditions laid out in the Bible that are to occur before the Rapture, none of which have occured:

  • Where is the rebuilt Temple ?
  • If the temple hasn’t been rebuilt, how can it be desecrated by the Antichrist?
  • Where is the Antichrist?
  • The institution of One World Government, Currency, and Reulgion
  • The battles against Israel by Russia and Iran
  • the return of jews to Israel

How can someone calulng themselves Christian ignore all of that?

They claim that Judgement Day is happening on May 21 (hey seem to use their own definition for Judgement Day - not the standard, end of the world, all people are judged etc) and then their idea is that 5 months later BOOM.

Either way, i still plan on being here on October 22 - regardless of your beliefs, this is a pretty crack pot mix up of lets read some of the bible, ignore the parts that contradict us, and see if we can create a global panic.

Submission + - Red Hat's Secret Patent Deal (gigaom.com)

Bruce Perens writes: When patent troll Acacia sued Red Hat in 2007, it ended with a bang: Acacia's patents were invalidated by the court, and all software developers, open-source or not, had one less legal risk to cope with. So, why is the outcome of Red Hat's next tangle with Acacia being kept secret, and how is a Texas court helping to keep it that way? Could the outcome have placed Red Hat in violation of the open-source licenses on its own product?

Submission + - Time to Rethink the School Desk?

theodp writes: As part of its reimagine the 21st-century classroom project, Slate asks: Is the best way to fix the American classroom to improve the furniture? While adults park their butts in $700 Aeron chairs, kids still sprawl and slump and fidget and dangle their way through the day in school furniture designed to meet or beat a $40 price point. 'We've seen in adults that if you put them in the right chair, their performance increases,' says Harvard's Jack Dennerlein. 'Is the same true for children? I can't see why not.' For school districts with deep pockets, there are choices — a tricked-out Node chair from IDEO and Steelcase can be had for $599.

Comment iPhone doesn't matter much (Score 1) 347

Despite Apple's insane press coverage and a Silicon Valley-centric view of reporters, the iPhone is still only 1/6 of the market in smartphones. A spectacular success for a newcomer, but not market domination. Even iPod, Apple's most successful product, has less than 1/4 market share. Apple has never managed to dominate a market. At best, they hit a peak at 15-20% and then slowly decline. In the end, there are only so many people willing to pay $500-$900 for an iPhone (and that's what it costs, whether it's hidden in subscription fees or paid up front).

Android, on the other hand, has the potential for some really low-cost devices ($100-$200), and its greater openness both towards carries and towards applications mean that it will likely overtake the iPhone in a couple of years.

Of course, the iPhone won't be "killed", just like the Mac won't be killed. Apple's market share dropped from an all-time high of 15% to a couple of percent and now is back at 3-4% worldwide, but it never disappeared.

GP does get a key point: The software is key. Carriers (and freaking Verizon in particular) in the US simply refused to understand this. They build the network, while all the innovation is in the handsets and the software, but for some reason, US carriers seem to think they are the true innovators and handset providers are fluff. Now that Verizon has screwed up on handsets for three years straight, they finally realize that their strength is simply the network they build. Maybe they've been listening to their own adds. They're finally going to ship a modern phone, without screwing up the software first. Stupidity at Verizon may be going out of style.

Anyway, as said before on slashdot, Android vs iPhone is just like Windows vs Mac all over again. With Verizon on board, Motorola building 20 new Android phones next year, and 50 Android sets in the works around the world, Android is set to finally deliver on it's promise of unifying the software across a broad spectrum of handsets. There wont be any single iPhone killer, just as no single PC was ever a Mac killer. However, I see nothing that can stop Android from becoming the world's dominant smart phone OS.

The Motorola Droid isn't quite as exciting of a device as the Sony Xperia X10. I suspect we'll keep seeing Android based "iPhone killers" plunk away until Adroid wins the race.

Prof. Johan Pouwelse To Take On RIAA Expert 184

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "Marie Lindor has retained an expert witness of her own to fight the RIAA, and to debunk the testimony and reports of the RIAA's 'expert' Dr. Doug Jacobson, whose reliability has been challenged by Ms. Lindor in her Brooklyn federal court case, UMG v. It was Prof. Pouwelse's scathing analysis of the RIAA's MediaSentry 'investigations' (PDF) in a case in the Netherlands that caused the courts in that country to direct the ISPs there not to turn over their subscribers' information (PDF), thus nipping in the bud the RIAA's intended litigation juggernaut in that country."
