It sounds like "zero withholding allowances" is your problem. By default, your company withholds taxes based on what the taxes would be for just your salary. But your actual taxes are based on you and your wife's combined salaries, which pushes you into higher tax brackets. The W4 "extra withholding" is intended to let you increase the withholding to avoid underpayment.

So I suggest you take a look at your last Federal form, and find out the difference between your household's total withholding and what the federal tax tables says your combined salary would owe.. Then you and your wife each file a W4 that sets the extra withholding to half of the shortfall divided by the number of pay periods you have.

You don't have to worry about getting this exactly right: as long as your total withholding is at least 90% of your actual tax liability, there is no penalty.

I'd recommend shopping around. In my experience, Turbotax is one of the most expensive tax sites.

I am a great fan of FreeTaxUSA. It has only one tier for tax preparation, and it has handled my income from salary, investments, and various Federal tax credits with no problem. They also claim it handles income from unemployment, social security, crypto, and rental properties, but I can't speak to that.

Federal Taxes are completely free, including e-file. And if they support your state, they will prepare and e-file your state taxes at $15 per state.

Perhaps you should actually read Sfcat's post before replying? Their point is that because of federal subsidies, what the consumer pays in France is a fraction of the actual cost to produce that energy. So how does a link showing consumer prices of power refute that?

FCC Promises to Fix Comment System Hijacked During Net Neutrality Repeal (vice.com) 36

FCC boss Ajit Pai says the agency will finally take steps to shore up the security of the FCC's public comment system after being widely criticized for turning a blind eye to routine fraud and abuse. From a report: If you'll recall, more than 22 million Americans voiced their thoughts on the Trump FCC's attack on net neutrality last fall via the agency's website. The vast majority of comments opposed the move, closely reflecting surveys that show widespread, bipartisan support for the rules. [...] Not a single one of your comments was cited in the FCC's 218 page justification for its decision.

[...] Back in May, Senators Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) fired off a letter to Pai demanding he actually do something about the abuse of FCC systems. [...] In a response letter this week provided to the Wall Street Journal, Pai says the agency is finally taking steps to address the problem, while acknowledging his own identity was hijacked during the comment process. "It is troubling that some bad actors submitted comments using false names," Mr. Pai said. "Indeed, like you, comments were submitted in my name and my wife's name that reflect viewpoints we do not hold." Pai's letter, which wasn't publicly shared, states that the FCC hopes to eventually "rebuild and re-engineer" the commission's electronic comment system "to institute appropriate safeguards against abusive conduct." It also states that Pai will approach Congress for funding for the overhaul, something Pai likely knows may not actually happen.

A troll? no. Only (perhaps) a slight exaggeration. Quoted from the FSF article on "why you shouldn't use Library GPL for your next library"

Using the ordinary GPL is not advantageous for every library. There are reasons that can make it better to use the Library GPL in certain cases. The most common case is when a free library's features are readily available for proprietary software through other alternative libraries. In that case, the library cannot give free software any particular advantage, so it is better to use the Library GPL for that library.

This is why we used the Library GPL for the GNU C library. After all, there are plenty of other C libraries; using the GPL for ours would have driven proprietary software developers to use another--no problem for them, only for us.

However, when a library provides a significant unique capability, like GNU Readline, that's a horse of a different color. The Readline library implements input editing and history for interactive programs, and that's a facility not generally available elsewhere. Releasing it under the GPL and limiting its use to free programs gives our community a real boost.
