So, the technology that relies on unthrottled hammering of people's websites is pissing off website owners? The technology built on absorbing copyrighted content without compensation for the creators now has people who produce the content putting up paywalls? All these stories planted in the media about how the AI agents are dangerous 1337 h4x0rz, and now people don't want them accessing their systems? So sad.

If there was, say, a physical self-storage company, lets call them Tim's Self Storage, and person A paid someone person B to store a bunch of their hard drives in a box in a storage unit that person B rents from Tim's Self Storage - and person B took the box and the hard drives and locked them in the storage unit, and then... disappeared, took the money and ran, refused to talk to person A - it's not entirely unreasonable for person A to contact Tim's Self Storage, maybe even go to court, to get Tim's Self Storage to unlock the storage unit and retrieve the box.

It's extremely stupid for person A to trust person B and hand them the box, rather than just store the hard drives themselves. But Tim's Self Storage just saying "hey we just own the land, what happens on it is not our responsibility" doesn't fly. Just saying the magical words "Cloud Infrastructure!" doesn't make the physical reality go away.

American companies aren't "overcharging" for their tokens. They are still offering them at an incredible discount, compared to the actual infrastructure and compute cost - a $200/mo OpenAI subscription can let you burn through about $14,000 of token value.

American companies are still deep in the "get them addicted, then increase the price" phase. If you think the recent token price apocalypse is bad, wait until OpenAI and Anthropic's loans come due shortly...

If there's any worthwhile direction in AI, it's creating smaller, more efficient models. Distillation is the only path forward.

It's going to be hilarious seeing the situation in the US in ten years time, it's going to look like Cuba, a bunch of people trying to keep ancient vintage gas-guzzling cars running, with no manufacturing industry to make new ones, and the rest of the world having moved on. I used Duolingo for a year, learning German. I also learned that that vocal matching game you can do repeatedly and that ramps up and up to high scores - you can do it repeatedly and get very, very good at it and get to the top of the tables fairly consistently. I wasn't cheating, I was just getting really fast at one specific exercise. It also meant I gave up on everything else, all the standard grammar lessons etc. and stopped learning anything much useful.

I then learned that it's cheaper and more effective than the increasingly enshittified Duolingo just to borrow novels in German from the library and read them with a translation dictionary.
