Journal Otter's Journal: The DNC Cometh: No More Garbage Cans! 9

In the latest chapter in the DNC fiasco -- Boston decided that sidewalk garbage cans are a security risk as they could be used to hide bombs. So they removed all the cans from the frames. Everyone then threw garbage in the frames, so they ran out and removed the frames.

Now everyone is throwing garbage on the sidewalk.

I'm in a good position, as I have a 15 minute bike ride to work that shouldn't be blocked by any of this craziness. So I can just be cruel and laugh at everyone else's misery... ;-)

  • They should be held in the middle of nowhere. It's not like there are many locals there. It's destination retail as they say :-P so why not put it somewhere _far_ away from I dunno large metropolitan areas! Ah well, sounds like you're not affected at least. How about a recap to see how the whole thing goes for a local?
    • I was in Los Angeles for the last DNC, and honestly, you barely knew they were there. In West LA, the only thing I noticed were the "anti-globalization" rioters trying to pick fights with the Beverly Hills police in the days before the convention started.

This year is different partly because of the added concern for security. But even under the old rules, Boston is simply not capable of handling such an event. It's too densely packed and a half-mile radius of shutdown causes complete paralysis.

      Ah well, sou

  • It takes some real stupidity to leave me speechless.
  • what gets me is this huge convention center (read: white elephant) that they built, and then refused to hold the CONVENTION in!!!! where are they holding it? The fleet center. Yep, that's right. Because Boston Garden got torn down, and they wouldn't have to disrupt as much traffic if they held it in that there, what's it called? Oh, yes, the CONVENTION CENTER!!!!

    *growl*
    • I loved today's story about the fenced-in areas they're building for protestors. ("Free speech areas", as though freedom of speech is some special new privilege they're handing out.) A couple of months ago people were joking about how protestors would be restricted to the Central Artery wreckage and now they're really doing it!
      • i know. How free is your speech if you have a 'designated protest zone'???

Did you hear they take out the mailboxes next? No kidding. All of them around the fleet centre. Damn it.
    • Not everyone is intimately familiar with Boston landmarks. What is this Fleet Center you speak of?
      • Exactly what it sounds like. A giant wash shoved up boston's backside whether we wanted it or not...

um... it's the replacement stadium for the boston garden, which they cheerfully knocked down a few years back.
