Journal Otter's Journal: Starting the new job! 4

I'm back from Israel, have half my pictures developed and I'll try to post soon with some stories, and hopefully some online pictures.

Meanwhile, though, tomorrow I start my new job! I am extremely psyched, both because it's an extremely exciting opportunity and because my old job was a downward spiral with a clear endpoint of leaving me unemployed just about now. I was cleaning out my office today and my wife was saying she hasn't seen me so happy in years.

(Oh, did I mention my upcoming paper in Science, that just got accepted after some incredible reviewer sleaziness? It's a measure of how sick I was of my job that I barely care at all. I was curious what was going to happen if it came out while I was collecting unemployment -- would they send out the usual press release and try to corral reporters to interview me while I flame on Slashdot in my underwear at 11 am? The whole thing was certainly a fitting capstone to my career in academic science.)

Fortunately, we ran out of grant money last fall and I basically stopped going to work in December, just staying home, writing papers and skiing. It's going to be a major adjustment getting up and going to work promptly every morning but realistically it'll be a good thing for me. At any rate, I've had a really rough couple of years so it's a funny feeling dealing with pleasure. I hope to get used to it!
