Journal Otter's Journal: Efficient government, unnecessary bowl games, Gentoo excess 1
- The award for efficient government goes to the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game for sending an email at 8:03 am on January 1 reminding me to get a new fishing license.
- Is it really necessary to have a bowl game outdoors in Idaho on December 31, named after a computer company I've never heard of, featuring two underwhelming teams? Even as (vaguely) a Canes fan it seems pointless. And that blue turf always gives me a headache.
- I've used some of my downtime to resurrect the Gentoo system I burned with an ill-advised 'emerge --prune'. Among other headaches, it's insisting that I need (so far!) four different versions of automake installed in parallel! (Update: It's now five versions: 1.4-p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9 and 1.8.5.) It supports what I've been realizing for a while now: that Portage, which used to be the distro's biggest selling point, is collapsing under the accumulation of more and more versions of more and more packages. Anyway, Slashdot reports that 2007 is going to be The Year Of Open Solaris On The Desktop! so maybe I'll give that a try when I finally give up on Gentoo.
Gentoo.. (Score:1)
I imagine its pretty sweet once its installed and running, but getting there seems like it can be a pretty monumental pain in the ass.
