Apple includes a cable, but has mostly stopped including wall adapters. That was fine when everyone had a junk drawer infested with USB-A wall adapters but now the included cables are USB-C on the other end. I've had multiple family members call me because they had no idea how to recharge their new watch or iPad. And we're gonna do this again when Apple finally retires lightning for USB-C across the board.

There were a lot of useful instructions, recommendations and general know-how that accumulated there over the years. You could get pretty decent answers to a lot of questions by adding "reddit" to the end of a search query. That's all been ruined by greed & incompetence.

Why do people try to make a business model on accessing someone else's software?

Virtually all application software accesses somebody else's software, systems & APIs. That's the whole reason to publish an API and make it available to third parties.

Reddit never really bothered to make their own app. They bought one and encouraged others to continue developing their own. Now, they're pulling the rug out from under those developers which is rude, but it happens. And that's a risk a developer just has to accept. But the real screwup here is that Reddit is leaving their users and volunteer labor high & dry too because their own app doesn't cut it. That's both rude and stupid.

We'll be better for it too, imo. The era of smaller community-focused discussion boards with specific interests, expertise and camaraderie was one of my favorite times on the Internet.

The convenience factor of having a single website with many vibrant communities is not outweighed by it being a single point of failure for admin/corporate fuckery. This has all happened before . . .

The execs sure as hell aren't taking pay cuts, so they're scrambling to slash & squeeze whatever they can.

I reinstall just-infrequently-enough that I don't maintain an image w/ all the updates slipstreamed in, so it invariably takes 20mins for the initial install, and then hours and hours for all the updates to get it current.

It'd be really nice if MS would be kind enough to provide up-to-date .ISO builds like they've been doing w/ the Win10 insider program

Comment Re:Renewable versus fossil - where is nuclear? (Score 1) 292

The biggest hurdle holding back nuclear power is the enormous upfront costs required to actually bring a plant online. They require a staggering amount of concrete and other materials to construct and it's extremely difficult to get all the cash together to do it. These are very high-risk investments with very long payback periods and a relatively small shift in commodity prices between the drawing board stage and actual construction can scuttle the whole deal.

Technically, you could make your own and keep consuming it to your heart's content, you're just not allowed to sell it to others.

Although there's the small issue that hydrogenating oil is an industrial process using pressure, high temperatures, and hydrogen gas. It's not out of reach to an adventurous home cook, but it sounds like a lot of work and a non-zero chance of accidental self-immolation for original recipe Crisco.

I'd just use lard.

Take away the student loan subsidies & redirect that money to merit-based scholarships. If we stop papering over the real price a university charges with "anybody can qualify" student loans, the universities will be forced to compete on costs ultimately lowering prices and reducing the scholarship dollars needed.
