Comment Re:What the US has as an ace in the hole (Score 1) 138

I fully agree that the problems can be and will be mitigated by more immigration. However, I am not sure the English language focus is based on reality:

In 2019, while the USA had taken in 50 million migrants, Europe has taken 80 million, Germany alone 15 million. Germany has 25% of the population of the USA, so considerably more in comparison.

France and UK had about the same level of migration, each below 10 million.

Submission + - Biden DOJ Halts Trump Admin Lawsuit Against California Net Neutrality Rules (arstechnica.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Biden administration has abandoned a Trump-era lawsuit that sought to block California's net neutrality law. In a court filing today, the US Department of Justice said it "hereby gives notice of its voluntary dismissal of this case." Shortly after, the court announced that the case is "dismissed in its entirety" and "all pending motions in this action are denied as moot."

The case began when Trump's DOJ sued California in September 2018 in US District Court for the Eastern District of California, trying to block a state net neutrality law similar to the US net neutrality law repealed by the Ajit Pai-led FCC. Though Pai's FCC lost an attempt to impose a blanket, nationwide preemption of any state net neutrality law, the US government's lawsuit against the California law was moving forward in the final months of the Trump administration.

The Biden DOJ's voluntary dismissal of the case puts an end to that. "I am pleased that the Department of Justice has withdrawn this lawsuit," FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said today. "When the FCC, over my objection, rolled back its net neutrality policies, states like California sought to fill the void with their own laws. By taking this step, Washington is listening to the American people, who overwhelmingly support an open Internet, and is charting a course to once again make net neutrality the law of the land."

Submission + - South Korea Leads World In Innovation; US Drops Out of Top 10 (bloomberg.com)

An anonymous reader writes: South Korea returned to first place in the latest Bloomberg Innovation Index, while the U.S. dropped out of a top 10 that features a cluster of European countries. Korea regained the crown from Germany, which dropped to fourth place. The Asian nation has now topped the index for seven of the nine years that it’s been published. Singapore and Switzerland each moved up one spot to rank second and third. The Bloomberg index analyzes dozens of criteria using seven equally weighted metrics, including research and development spending, manufacturing capability and concentration of high-tech public companies.

Korea’s return to the top spot is mainly due to an increase in patent activity, where it ranks top, alongside a strong performance in R&D and manufacturing. Second-placed Singapore, which has been allocating budget funds to help workers and companies transition to a digital economy, also scores high for manufacturing –- and its globally competitive universities put it top of the tertiary education gauge. Switzerland, a leader in financial and biological technology, ranks near the top in both of the index’s research categories. Germany’s loss of the crown follows a warning two years ago by Juergen Michels, chief economist of Bayerische Landesbank, who said the country lacked skilled workers and a proper strategy for next-generation technology. As the two biggest economies, the U.S. and China account for much of the world’s innovation. But both saw their rankings decline this year.

The U.S., which topped the first Bloomberg Innovation Index in 2013, dropped two places to 11th. The country scores badly in higher education, even though U.S. universities are world-famous. That underperformance was likely made worse by obstacles to foreign students, who are usually prominent in science and technology classes — first due to the Trump administration’s visa policies, and later to the pandemic. China, which fell one place to 16th in the 2021 index, is locked in a battle with the U.S. over key aspects of innovation policy. Other gainers in this year’s index include India, which climbed back into the top 50 for the first time since 2016, and Uruguay, which qualified for the first time. Algeria and Argentina were among the countries that fell furthest.

The number of children per woman in Pakistan has decreased rapidly in the last decades to now around 3 children per woman (2.3 is required for population to just be static in the long run). The only reason the population still grows is many children growing up and having (on average 2-3) kids of their own. There is no statistic link between religion and population growth.

Actually, some people seem to come from Germany for health treatments with its universal health care, e.g. the Russian oligarchs, the Saudi and Kuwaitis and all these poor people. As non-citizens, they generally do pay for their treatment, but they can't be that unhappy or they would not come here. I can assure you, I have more trust in the German universal health-care system than I have in the US system.

You are not correct:

libreoffice is written in C++. There are some JAVA plugins, but they do not relate to the GUI. I find libreoffice quit snappy, but format conversion to word is lossy and some features (e.g. track changes) are not as mature as in MS word. MS Word on the other hand is a nightmare that everyone has gotten accustomed to.

This was really the most annoying and persisiten bug that I can recall - panel would not get updated if using nvidia binaries and there was a full-screen app (i.e. game) in the background. I hope it is fixed!

Not just use the same recent file method as firefox and gnome and I will donate 100 EUR to the developer who does it, that is the last thing that really annoys me.
