So lets say I am ahead in a field and have a few up and coming competitors. There is a simple solution to the problem, lets get the government to regulate us all. This causes our competitors to massively slow down as they have to respond to the regulations that I wrote (I don't have to slow down as much - I wrote the regulations such that I am already following them of course). There is also a cost to complying with regulations - it tends not to scale with size more like a static cost. As a large incumbent I can spend a billion dollars complying with regulations. That small startup can not spend a billion dollars to comply, even is I can limit my costs to something I can afford to pay - that is money I am paying regulators not engineers making my product better.

That is still common for USA network tv shows. It is streaming that pegs a "season" at 8 episodes. The big difference is a "season" in streaming tends to be a long story, as opposed to network TV tends to be standalone episodes with possible overarching plot across it.

That is a shame that you are in the rent paying class. The easiest way through life is to start young with nothing, spend less than you make and eventually own assets. You might start with a car rather than renting one (or borrowing money for one) all though cars are very bad investments. You might then start funding a 401k (in the USA) and start putting assets away for retirement in HORROR stocks and bonds of companies. You may want to stop paying rent and purchase your own home. Finally you may finally have enough money flowing into your retirement accounts that it is worth opening a normal brokerage account and investing into your future. You may find out that eventually your assets are generating more money that your labor and at that point you are in a good place.

This... was the worst part of the outcome of the anti-trust loss... Microsoft had to remove active desktop from the UI, and now 25 years later they are getting a shittier version back. In the day it was fun to throw dilbert on the bottom of the screen, random stock quotes down the side and slashdot on the other side. This would just show you things you would want to see on a daily basis and didn't take opening a window. You just embedded the browser rendering engine into a chunk of your desktop.

Of course the best thing was to grab someone and put hamster dance as their windows desktop - especially if they had sound anywhere. Always fun at the office

It may not be when either, but where. I started 40 years ago in Texas around this range. I quickly skyrocked up to ~100K moving to the west coast 30 years ago and doubling that moving to Silicon Valley 10 years ago. I would not expect to be making what I make here if I moved back to Texas - but then my housing costs would be half of what they are here.

Working for Intel in the 90s there was a bonus that went into your 401k. It wasn't a match it was a serious chunk of change. Depending on profitability it was somewhere in the teens usually. This is retirement money that can get big fast. Big Paul O looked at it and said industry benchmarking is a 6% match, He got rid of it and started paying industry standard. There was a year they gave out raises - but you only got half because they wanted more profitability. Guess what, never showed up. I mean seriously if you are going to hand out raises, just don't say you get half now and half later...
