If I remember correctly, Hormel (the makers of SPAM) actually did this with regards to the appropriation of their trademark to refer to unsolicited commercial email. They basically said, "Look, we'd rather you not use our trademark in a negative light, but we don't want to be dicks about it so we're granting permission anyway."

I like the way you think. It would be great if they could offer the song files in the same way that Rifftrax does. Even better would be, you pay $1 for the click track and put your CD of the song in and the game rips it for you.

However, the game data is more than just the click track. Each song is split into several tracks so that the game can realistically model the sound when a player misses a note. CDs and tracks from iTunes aren't separated into bass, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals, drums and backup tracks.

You can still play a guitar hero type game with a one-track song, but a lot of the verisimilitude is missing the moment you miss a note and don't receive audio feedback.

In order to get the multi-track version of a song, you either need to get it from the original producer or cover it yourself. For indie bands and in-house stuff, this isn't much of a problem. For mainstream songs, you need to cut a deal with the song owner, i.e. the label.

Three Downloadable Expansions Announced For Final Fantasy XI 51

Square Enix has announced plans to release three expansion chapters to Final Fantasy XI. Their blog post provided some details about the new content: "The first installment, A Crystalline Prophecy — Ode of Life Bestowing, is slated for release for all languages and platforms in Spring of next year. Subsequent installments will then follow, being released in intervals of every few months. These expansions packages will only be available through online purchase via PlayOnline. The projected cost for each installment is around $10.00. ... Up until now, expansion packs have generally been developed from a perspective of 'lateral expansion,' focusing namely on the introduction of new areas. These three new expansions, however, will deepen the storylines running through pre-existing areas by ushering in all-new plots and intrigues. While not necessarily containing as much content as traditional expansions, these episodic scenarios are designed to take anywhere from one to two months to complete."

Mars Rover, Spirit, Turns 4 149

Brandee07 writes "Designed for a 90 day mission, the Spirit Mars Rover is starting its 4th year of exploration. Spirit's sister-module, Opportunity, will turn four on Jan 25. 'We never thought we'd still be driving these robots all over Mars,' said Mark Lemmon, a planetary scientist at Texas A&M University and member of the rover science team. 'We joked about driving Opportunity into Victoria Crater, but now we're there, and we're looking at doing even more science. Each day they still work is an amazing one.'"
