Comment Re:The future of Linux supercomputing (Score 2, Interesting) 96

One Linux-based HPC vendor bought out another Linux-based HPC vendor, this will not really effect Linux on HPC. All of the Top 10 of the TOP500 use Linux in one way or another. The Blue Genes have SLES on the service nodes and CNK on the compute nodes. The SGI is SLES with add-ons. The HPs are Linux clusters. The Crays are SLES on the service nodes and either Catamount or Linux on the computes.

Linux is very pervasive in HPC and becoming more so. Since I know a little something about Cray, the newest vector and scalar lines both use Cray Linux Environment (CLE) formerly called Compute Node Linux (CNL). Cray's CNL was released in second half of 2007 and already over half of the Cray processors in production are running CLE on the computes instead of Catamount, the very lean, proprietary compute node OS.

University of Washington Presents — the Terminator Eye

DirectedImpact writes to tell us the University of Washington is making great strides towards having an embedded HUD (among other things) in your contact lens. "During [the last few] years scientists have presented several real life applications of these contact lens and they talked about helping vision-impaired people, holographic driving control panels, Internet surfing on the go, concluding with the fact that the material of which they would be built is flexible and biologically safe."

Tangible Display Makes 3D Touchable 112

moon_monkey writes "Researchers in Japan have developed a display that makes 3D objects solid enough to grasp. The system, created by engineers at Japan's NTT, combines a 3D display with a haptic glove, making 3D items that look real but also feel solid to touch. Two cameras are used to image an object, to make the 3D image. A computer also uses this to render a solid representation. It could be used to inspect products remotely, or even to shake hands with someone on the other side of the world, the researchers say."
