Back in the mid 1980s, my SKOOL tried to dismiss us *INTO* a violent thunderstorm that suddenly blew up at the end of the school day. I will never forget how fast the distant clouds rushed into the area, like some timelapse, and that horrific screeching sound it made coming in. I've never seen anything like it before or since then. I was one of the walk home students and I refused to go out into that dangerous storm. When my mom finally arrived in the family car and picked me up, we went down a road and had to suddenly stop and turn around because a huge, thick tree was lying across the road from sidewalk to sidewalk. I could've easily have been under that tree.
I suspect the movement of the clouds, the screech, and the tree was caused by a tornado, but living in southeastern Pennsylvania at the time, we didn't have tornado sirens or a real tornado detection system set up.
I'm still mad that my school was so reckless, just because the staff wanted to get home ASAP.
