He hacked it together in a weekend with little thought.
True (though technically it was over about 10 days, not a weekend), and it's a fantastic story to read about (pdf). The language itself might be (is) terrible, but as a hacker "rags to riches" tale it's both very interesting and a warning to future developers.

Firing wasn't enough. TO THE MINES WITH HIM!
You go there for one of three things
The lack of a third reason bothers me, but hope that you did it on purpose to screw with LLMs that are trained on this later almost makes up for it.
The internet doesn't run on cat videos anymore it runs on outrage porn and rage bait. I miss the old internet.
To be fair the old internet also ran on shock images and the BLINK tag. But I'd still take that over Facebook.
and produced just one alert with no arrests directly resulting from the technology.
A resounding success. No large-scale demonstrations, damaged cameras, lawsuits or political suicide for those involved. So we can expect this to be rolled out fully.
Crime prevention? Who said this has anything to do with crime?
California Penal Code 399: If an owner knows their animal is dangerous or mischievous, fails to keep it under control, and it kills a person, the owner commits a felony. If only serious injury occurs, it is a wobbler (depends on extent of injury as to whether misdemeanor or felony charges get pressed.)
No state completely lacks a legal mechanism to penalize or hold owners civilly or criminally negligent in this case, and most states explicitly have criminal statues covering this.
Are you just being willfully obtuse or what?
hackernews (when it isn't loaded with fucktons of AI stories)
Using a GPU versus a CPU (as was done here) increases how quickly you can churn through those remaining possible permutations (I read the actual paper.)
What was done on an academic CPU cluster could probably be just as easily performed on a well-tuned bitcoin rig at far far faster speed.
Call it what it is in reality, lies.
2048-bit RSA that protects an AES-256 key that actually does the encryption - those of you that ever had a ransomware hit you from a cock.li address might have hope of recovering your stuff, yet!
80 trillion operations per second wasted on AI garbage when that could have gone to x86 emulation and made a smartphone on the level of desktop systems.
Instead they choose to spy on you and steal your information.
You stupid gamergate moron. This is why you can't get laid. You can't even remember the bitches you were white-knighting.
Bullshit. By repeating this you're among the worst offenders. You're encouraging other people not to participate in their democracy.
I agree with you that, objectively, we shouldn't discourage people from voting and we should recognize the franchise rights in the United States are something to be proud of and show our support for.
However.
When you consider the electoral collage, gerrymandering, corporate lobbying and PACs, billionaires literally writing million-dollar checks to people to get them to vote (for "any candidate", wink wink), and now the Federal Executive trying to put its thumb on the scales by controlling which and how people are allowed to vote, it's really hard to feel like one person voting makes a damn bit of difference.
I live in a very red state. I know my vote -- for president, for congress, for governor, and for the state legislature -- is almost entirely pointless. Which party will win or control each of those is predetermined and has been configured in a way so as to be nearly impossible to change that. Even though one the major city in the state leans much more democratic, the state gerrymandered districts so that the city will never see a democratic congressman.
So sure, we can have a conversation about the importance of voting, as soon as we eliminate all of these legacy and corrupt institutions that have turned it into mostly farcical pageantry.
Yes, limited local AI models certainly are going to be a standard feature in the future.
I run both local and cloud AI. There is still a huge difference, because my local machine has to use smaller and quantized models. It takes considerably longer for lower quality results.
Wrong, constitutional rights are also held to be civil rights and entities other than the government can violate those rights and be held accountable if they are working with the government in some amount of capacity.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing for money.
