HP builds multi-function machines as well, the scanners SHOULD position them for doing well transitioning from a printed world to an exclusively digital one, but the software they provide for scanning is wholly inadequate. They don't even include OCR with their scanning software.

There will never be a "year of the desktop", because the desktop is dead. The reality is that such a large percentage of the population use mobile devices for the majority of their interactions that whatever happens on the desktop is irrelevant. I find it bizarre because the mobile experience is so abysmal compared to a proper desktop. But I've never understood the mainstream, and I guess this is just another example of that.

Indeed, that is why anyone with a clue wouldn't make important (hell, any... ) devices on a Cloud Service. I, and I hope nobody with a clue, wouldn't accept a firewall that is cloud dependent.

Mine beeps but also gives me an estimate for the time needed. That is useful. I just set an alert on my phone based on that time. Not hard.

There are a LOT of milk choices, I already have to decide between Cow, Oat, Soy, Coconut, Cashew, Flax, Hemp, and Blends/Pea Protein - also unsweetened, original, chocolate, and vanilla for the plant-based options - and skim, 1%, 2%, whole, and A2 for Cow.. If I need to then scan multiple cartons with my phone (and USE MY DATA) to finalize my decision I'd be pretty annoyed.

If you have to individualize the Qcode, the cost to continue to include a human-readable date is trivial so why not both? But if you do remove the human-readable date, at least have a scanner right by the fridge so I don't have to use my own phone and data.

I do like the idea of automatic price reductions for milk nearer expiration, we go through four cartons a week here, so milk with four days to go would usually be fine.
