Journal LoseNotLooseGuy's Journal: The Supporters of the Cause Come Through 12

The last week has seen some positive developments. Thanks to generous donations of modpoints from squiggleslash, darkmoon, and markaa, my Karma now sits at 13. That means I am relatively immune to attacks from isolated moderators; only a conspiracy by the Legions of Evil will be sufficient to overthrow my Quest at this point.

Of course, donations of modpoints will still be gratefully accepted.

Comments on my previous journal entries have been locked down, so I will use this space to acknowledge some new Friends of the Cause: bigdreamer, markaa, and I Want GNU! I am grateful for your support.

Now, off to tend to my duty.

Update 03/02/02: The Cause has been attacked again. Unbelievable. Moderator: if you are reading this, please let me know who you are so that I may add you to my list of foes. Remember, Lex Luthor always made it utterly apparent who was behind the evil scheme of the day; it is only fair that you extend me the same courtesy.

For the record, Karma is currently at 9.

Update 03/07/02: Make that 7. The disturbing trend seems to be for some moderators to systematically search out my posts to downgrade them. Sadly, none of these nameless foes have had the courage to identify themselves.

The Supporters of the Cause Come Through

  • I think this shows how annoyed we can get at the oddities and misuses of the English language.

If anything, this shows to me that most Slashdotters aren't careful with their English (and that some people, including me, get a bit too worked up about the thing.)

Of course, I will still give LosenotLooseGuy mod points if I ever get the opportunity.
  • This is a looseing cause! :)
  • Whilst you babble on in the most pedantic way possible, the rest of the world, Slashdot posters and anyone else that is using the English language are creating neologisms, synonyms and new uses of words. I am not for one minute suggesting that loose should become a synonym for lose, but say this merely to state that the English language is fluid.

It is people like you that criticised Milton, Chaucer and Shakespeare for using neologisms and creating new synonyms. Its a kind of conservative superiority complex that reflects very poorly on your person.

While the occasional typo is an annoyance, most people guess [gasp] just by context that 'loose' has been accidently substituted for 'lose'. Therefore you are redundant. The world keeps turning on its axis, I for one will still make the occasional typo and you present nothing more than a minor annoyance. Get a life.
    • What you apparently fail to grasp is that I am not "NoTyposGuy". I have defined a very clear role for myself. While the average typo is readily overlooked as such, the lose/loose error is not. The fact that the two words exhibit related (but not identical) definitions means that one has to exert unnecessary effort to derive the intended meaning of the posting. That ruins the comment for me, regardless of however Informative/Insightful it may be.

Furthermore, I am concerned that the error is becoming more prolific. Given the claim of "news for nerds" that this site clings to, Slashdot should be an arena for intellectual discussion rather than a breeding ground for linguistic errors.

But I have ranted enough. I do appreciate your heated criticism, as it gives me cause to add you to my overly short list of foes. Every superhero needs to have some villains.
