Switzerland is a monoculture with about 9 million people total.

The S in USA stands for 'States', as in separate sovereign entities of which there are currently 50. All of Switzerland would fit into Texas (one of the States) nearly 17 times. Starting to get an idea of the scope of the problem?

I really did try not to be condescending when crafting this; it is just a side effect of reducing the issue to simple terms.

Switzerland is a not a monoculture: It is called Swiss Confederation, hence the CH code, for a reason. Switzerland is a federal state, as are the USA.
Additionally there are four official languages, which makes it even less of a monoculture.

You have two options:

The first: be the BOFH and laugh at the stupid users, who do not read/understand the error.

The second: be the smart programmer and anticipate user errors.

This means that for typical user errors you should provide a concise description of the problem and a text explaining how to correct the problem.

Example:

"The date you entered is wrong." should be "The date you entered cannot be parsed. Please provide the date in the format YYYY/MM/DD, e.g. 2009/12/12".

Of course, if an error pops up multiple time a day, it may be that the software is not very intuitive.

Hydrogen peroxide powered rocket packs fly for around 30 seconds, because they have a specific impulse of around 125, meaning that one pound of propellant can make 125 pound-seconds of thrust, meaning that it takes about two pounds of propellant for every second you are in the air. Mass ratios are low for anything strapped to a human, so the exponential nature of the rocket equation can be safely ignored.

A pretty hot (both literally and figuratively) bipropellant rocket could manage about twice the specific impulse, and you could carry somewhat heavier tanks, but two minutes of flight on a rocket pack is probably about the upper limit with conventional propellants.

However, an actual jet pack that used atmospheric oxygen could have an Isp ten times higher, allowing theoretical flights of fifteen minutes or so. Here, it really is a matter of technical development, since jet engines have thrust to weight ratios too low to make it practical. There is movement on this technical front, but it will still take a while.

After reading the review, I miss an important point.

How does this game compare to Shen Mue? It seems that Yakuza is its direct descendant.

They both have combat, asian city blocks to explore and minigames.
They also seem to share a plot-driven approach.

More in general, I feel that reviews should position a game, by comparing it to the more similar alternatives.

It's not the new year yet, but it seems like a good time to give thanks.

Long story short, I've had a good year. Great job, short commute, and dating again. I've become focused, but with great flexibility. I'm not sweating the big stuff, or the small stuff. The good stuff is in the middle.

May your holidays be commercial-free,

American companies are moving tech jobs overseas to India [more info]. Why? Simple, it's all about money. But how is that so? The article says that Indian programmers make 1/10th that of American programmers. Why do they make so much less?

I'm not an economist, but here's a some possible reasons:
