Ask the subset: how to batch convert iTunes to MP3?

  • Because if it were up to me, I'd leave them as is, transcoding them will degrade the quality, no?

    My suggestion would be to rerip as many of the tracks as possible from CDs, and then pirate the rest.
    • You're right, it will degrade quality. Best would be to rerip all to FLAC or "Apple Lossless Encoder".... From such a source, transcoding is not a problem. That said, perpare to need huge disks....
  • As far as I know, the best you can hope for is to convert AAC tracks to analog audio, then re-encode to MP3. Some time back I tried to find an AAC decrypter, but couldn't find anything that worked with tracks encoded by iTunes 6 or higher.

    Conceivably, you could use something like this to do it. However, you would take a hit on sound quality. And I'm not sure the command line tools exist to decode an AAC file. Maybe it could be done with AppleScript?

    Loop through all files passed to script {
    Pull ID3

  • Provided you talk about non-DRM AAC files.... Simply do it with iTunes! Imagine that all your files in iTunes are AAC and you want them in MP3, start iTunes, then select the complete music library (Ctrl-A in Library/Music). Go to: "Advanced" -> "Convert to MP3".

    If it's not all the files, make a playlist that contains the files you want to convert and do the same procedure.

    If those AAC files are from the iTunes store and DRM encumbred (the Plus files are just fine), you first have to unprotect them.

System checkpoint complete.

Working...
