I just wanted to do a little calculation and typed it into the google-bar. No result. Hunh? Checked http://www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator - yup, the feature is still listed, but doesn't work ATM. Damn, that calculator is so useful - hope it's not gone for good.

"1+1" does come out as "4".
Maybe the more obscure types were removed.
As this is 8? hours later, 11pm EDT, maybe they fixed it.

In *nix, there's a nifty command-line tool called "dc" that does calculations for you. Who needs Google?

  Because I have Windows at work, for one. Because just typing "2*345/65.3=" into the Google search bar in the browser I have open anyway is at least as fast as typing it into the terminal, even when that is already running dc - no, wait, I'd have to do NPR it first. And last but not least because Google Calculator lets me convert "5 rods/hogshead in mpg" as well as combine that with some currency conversion with close to actual rates.
