Submission + - Breakthrough in AI - Bridges Transformers and Neuroscience Without Sacrificing (arxiv.org) 1

An anonymous reader writes: Ever wondered if AI could think more like a human brain while still crushing language tasks like today's top models? Enter Dragon Hatchling (BDH), a groundbreaking new large language model from researcher Jan Chorowski. Inspired by the brain's efficient, scale-free networks, BDH uses a swarm of locally connected "neuron particles" to process data, blending biological realism with Transformer-level performance. It matches GPT-2's results on translation and language benchmarks with the same parameter sizes (from 10 million to 1 billion), all while following brain-like rules like synaptic plasticity and Hebbian learning—think neurons firing and wiring together in real time. What sets it apart? Built-in interpretability: its activations are sparse and clear, making it easier to peek inside and understand how it reasons about concepts. Plus, it's GPU-friendly, biologically plausible for explaining human speech, and scales up smoothly, potentially unlocking more universal AI reasoning. A fresh take on merging machines and minds that's as practical as it is intriguing.

First that I had a contact with: my friend's first gen C64, somewhere in 1983 - extremely early, if you consider we were behind iron curtain (and existence od CoCom exports embargo).
Later in the computer club: ZX81, ZX Spectrum 48k, ZX Spectrum +, Acorn (? some 8-bit)
At elementary school they've got single Amstrad CPC 464
Finally after some years got my first - Atari 800 XE (looked luke 65/130XE, but had option to add memory, so basically to turn 65XE to 130XE)
And a bit later - 2nd gen C64

You are assuming it was country with civilised mentality. Soviets/Russians were known for shooting own retreating troops, by KGB during WW2. Now, there was a rumour that Chechen troops were doing similar "motivation" for deserters or retreating soldiers. Russians are also not interested in retrieving corpses; they did some by we could safely assume they retrieved less than 30% bodies.

Submission + - Tesla Moving Headquarters From California To Texas (cnbc.com)

phalse phace writes: During Tesla's shareholder meeting today, CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's headquarters will be moving from California to Texas, making good on his threat to do so after Alameda County officials blocked the full reopening of Tesla's Fremont plant.

Regardless of the move, Musk reiterated that Tesla would be increasing production at its California plant: “To be clear we will be continuing to expand our activities in California. Our intention is to increase output from Fremont and Giga Nevada by 50%. If you go to our Fremont factory it’s jammed.” He further added that “It’s tough for people to afford houses, and people have to come in from far away.... There’s a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area.”

The news comes almost a year after Musk revealed that he personally moved to Texas.
