Journal KshGoddess's Journal: About as funny as a train wreck. 20

Let me start out by saying I think that our family would make an interesting TV special now, and I think that we should be on Jerry Springer just because of what's been done in the last 24 hrs.

What's going on? The short story is that my oldest brother is pressing charges against our Dad, for theft (theft by taking), and talked to the state Head Drug Inspector, who, along with the employer involved, will be pressing criminal trespass and theft of controlled substance charges for something that happened some time ago.

Longer story: Dad refused to go back to work for the past year or so. He's been selling collectibles on ebay, some of which belonged to my brother (who still has receipts). My brother bought a (used) car for mom & dad, and wanted to take it for the evening. Dad blew up and said that if he took the car, he'd get the cops after my brother for car theft. Couple this with emails purporting to be God, or one of God's chosen ("Only God and I can judge")... and the fact that he started screaming at mom when she asked for him to pick her up from the airport (he then threatened to file abandonment charges)... well, it's been a fun week.

Mom's at a battered women's shelter, my oldest brother's got a protective order against dad, and the cops patrolling his neighborhood extra-well. Dad's most likely using some sort of drugs again, or had some sort of mental breakdown. Those are the only 2 explanations for his behavior that I can think of, and the first is more likely, as he's selling stuff, overdrew their bank account, and is acting like a lunatic. Oh, and their house is being forclosed on. (Is that the right wording? I don't know, I'm no financial genius.)

I've done 6 restores and had lunch today. I'm just glad that I'm not physically closer, or I might've taken off today to try to clean things up, get my minor brothers out of the house. I had a dream the other night where I was in court, asking for custody of them while mom rebuilt her life. I've not told the husband unit about that, as I hope it doesn't come to that. Hopefully before that happens, one of my aunts will step in.

Got stress? I swear, it's not a full moon, but people are just NUTS right now. Only 4 more hours until I leave work. Deal with traffic, talk to el husband on the ride home, and maybe go home and beat up some monsters (on the PS2). I've 'finished' Dark Cloud 2 -- once. There's another chapter left after the main baddie's dead, though. There's no "Calgon, take me awayyyy" commercial anymore, but that's about how I'm doing.

  • Throw in some alcohol, remove the ebay and that's the situation a friend of mine's been in for a long while :(
    • I lump alcohol into the 'drugs' category. Mostly because all of the 'addiction therapists' tend to (or tended to).

It's almost like rewinding 10 years; I was as helpless then as now, for different circumstances -- I had no license, no job, a car that I bought for them from the mutual fund that my grandmother left for me (which they promised to teach me to drive), and I was still in high school. Now, I've got a license, a car, a job, and a husband, AND I'm 3k miles away. On purpose, for the most part, as thi

        • If work would ease off a bit, I could probably handle the familial instability, but having both at once sucks TOTAL ass. Users deleted all the rows of a production DB that neither our group (network services) nor the DB group knew was production. We're in the middle of an Oracle upgrade on one box, and with the standard fare of emergencies... and everything R&D IT does is marked URGENT! or HIGH PRIORITY!

Bleh. I'd say I need a beer (or equivalent), but I don't believe in that kind of escapism. I need to

      • yeah my friend is kind of like that too. I've known her sincee she was 17 and she's now 25. During college her parents would eat up the extra scholarship money she work hard to get. And she still has 4 siblings at home, one who is older and mentally handicapped, 2 are under 12 I think, and the other is frightengly close to following in hid dad's foot steps. :/ Neither parent is physically healthy and the dad isn't mentally. Not crazy just abusive, which I guess is crazy in a way. I was with her throug
  • I hope it gets better soon.
    Aren't relatives great.
Keep a stiff upper lip & stuff.
  • Talk to spouse. That's why he's there. Hope it works out.
    • It'll work out, but it's just the grey-hair-creating stress that getting through it will cause. More music... gotta go to my happy happy playlist for the last 2 hrs of work today.

Odd. When I'm stressed, I always find my loud, violent [slashdot.org] playlist works better. Still, I can only offer sympathy, and hope you get through it all OK.

  • I hope that things work out for all of you. This sounds so painful.

Well...I was always under the impression that my family was all set for Jerry Springer. I do wish you the best of luck, but family in-fighting is never something that luck will get you out off. Just so you know that this sort of scenario is pretty common, I'll give you a little bit of my horror story. To make this short and sweet, I'll just list off the relatives and try to give an explaination.

1.) Sister - Alcoholic, Manic-depressive, angry angry angry drunk. DCFS has declared her an unfit mother.
    2.
  • Maybe he knows my Brother-In-Law, who thinks he Jesus (Has something to do with the amount of Pot he smokes, methinks). Then there is my Sister-In-Law who thinks shes being spied-on by UPS (I just think shes wacked, no drugs involved)

We all have our Family Problems, in one way or another...
  • Well, the good news is that you will survive.

How "wet" you get depends how many rapids your raft has to traverse before you get through this one.

Sounds a bit like my step-dad.

He's got a major prescription pain pill addiction and massive health problems. He spends any money my Mom manages to make or that I give them.

3 1/2 years ago I let myself get talked into helping them out when they started flushing their life down the toilet (again). Durning that time I gave them massive amounts of money, paid for storage, loaned them my car, and let them stay at my house. Getting layed off finally gave me the backbone to cut them off. The loan of the car was
    • See, I know my limits. I would take care of my brothers, because they're minors, and they had no choice in where they were living, etc. Mom can take care of herself, IMHO. I know that sounds cruel, but she's the adult, and she got herself into this situation. She can dig herself out.

She needs support, but I don't have the resources to support her in the ways she needs to be supported. She needs a shoulder to cry on, but I can't be that shoulder. I was the adult all the time when I was the child. I won't ge

Nothing cruel about it at all. Its the same conclusion I eventually came to. Unfortunately it was after I exceeded my limits a couple of times.
  • i don't really know what to say. of course, that means i will post something anyway. i'm sorry for what you have to go through. suddenly it doesn't matter so much anymore that i hate my job. things could be much worse. i'm not sure how that is supposed to make you feel better.

how old is your brother? is there some way he can get himself and his stuff out of your dad's house?

    things get better.
    • My youngest 2 brothers are 14 and 10. My oldest two brothers are already 'out of the house' at 19 and 20. Thankfully, the kids were able to be extracted from the house. (see the update je)
