Same here, even told the kids that I won't have this kind of shit on machines that are on the inside of my private network. I explained them what this was about, and basically they went "oh, k understood". The youngest installed it years later and I saw him playing it, and I was like dude what the fuck is this Valorant and he was like ah shit I forgot they installed those rootkits? Am I fucked? Can we clean that up or is it a clean reinstall?

And I was very proud of my youngest son, that he somehow ended up with enough of an understanding of computers and networks that most regular folk probably never acquire in their lifetime.

We nuked that machine from orbit, including re-flashing the UEFI, and reinstalled it together. It was a nice, good humored father-son thing.

I'd be fine with this. Recently Audible removed a book from my library and essentially told me to kick rocks. I'd listened to it when I first got it, and although I wanted to go back and check something in one of the chapters (which is how I found the book was no longer available), it's not the end of the world: it's just $15 they stole from me.

It is mildly frustrating to me that many government websites simply change where things are each year. Worse is when a department goes through the amazingly beneficial operation of name change. /s

Journal Journal: 30 years on the net

Well, that escalated quickly. Or not so quickly. Looking at my post from 20 years ago, if you had told me just how much shittier the Internet would become, I wouldn't have believed you. There's a proverb that the web mainly consists of five websites, each full of screenshots and reposts of the other four, and it's not far from the truth. Social media brought us a social web usable by anyone, just as we imagined it in the 90's, but it didn't bring the democratization of knowledge, the social s

No, they are not. The fork is female and the spoon male in German.

When I learned French, one of the hardest things was remembering gender of French words because they often differ from the German ones. Car (female in French, neutral in German) or the sun (male in French, female in German) come to mind.
