Submission + - Lunar Base Foe Romney Endorsement by Lunar Base Su (yahoo.com)

MarkWhittington writes: "Mitt Romney has infamously suggested that the idea of lunar colonies is "zany" and his ridiculed Newt Gingrich's idea of building a lunar base by 2020. However Romney has been endorsed by a group of aerospace heavyweights, including Apollo moonwalker Gene Cernan and former NASA administrator Mike Griffin, many of whom have previously supported the idea of lunar bases."

Submission + - Righthaven Redux... With a Difference (boingboing.net)

Capt.Albatross writes: At Boing Boing, Rob Beschizza reports that, in an act of delicious irony, Swiss ISP Ort Cloud [sic] has acquired Righthaven's domain name and has relaunched Righthaven.com as a web hosting service diametrically opposed to the practices of its original owner, a notorious but ultimately unsuccessful copyright troll. The new owners, in partnership with first amendment lawyer Marc Randazza (who was instrumental in the original Rigthhaven's demise), promise "infrajuridsictional infrastructure" — uptime that would require international cooperation to bring down. "Frivolous plaintiffs will find little comfort here" says Ort Cloud's Stefan Thalberg.

The domain name became available in a court-ordered auction of Righthaven LLC's assets, to pay its creditors.

Comment An Australian DST time zone border-sitter (Score 1) 359

I have the benefit/detriment of living on the cusp of a timezone, the NSW/QLD imaginary border, which an hour apart. There are benefits of course; the banks and stores are open an hour later in QLD of an afternoon. My work (invariably over the border) means I can sleep in for another hour, yet means I get home later.

Everybody you talk to refers to either NSW or QLD time, as it's the nightmare we face six months of the year - many an appointment is missed as you arrive an hour late, or the annoyance of an hour early.

QLD had a governmental enquiry into adopting NSW daylight savings time, which was accepted by the Southern QLD population, but was defeated by the Northern, as they didn't want their curtains to be bleached, nor their cows to be confused by the extra hour of sunshine. I kid you not, that was their reasoning.

I come from a somewhat rural background, yet shudder to think of the idiocy behind that.

Submission + - The Coming Uranium Crisis

tcd004 writes: "MIT reports that the world is running out of fuel for our nuclear reactors due to production limitations and an aging infrastructure. Nuclear power has gained popularity as a carbon-free energy source in recent years, but Dr. Thomas Neff, a research affiliate at MIT's Center for International Studies, warned that fuel scarcity could drive up prices and kill the industry before it gets back on its feet. Passport has pulled together some interesting numbers: there are 440 reactors currently in operation and 82 new plants under construction. The demand for fuel has driven the price of uranium up more than 40% in the last few months — 900% over the last decade. You can follow the spot price for a pound of uranium here."
