I'm looking up and down this whole thread and I don't see any evidence of what you're saying. Or maybe you're just anti-American/French and are projecting your own opinions onto others?

Besides, language is about communication. It doesn't matter how it gets done, just that it gets done. Sure the world has hundreds of languages around, but in today's world, english is the common language that binds the world together. If that hurts some people's egos, well then tough luck. Go ahead and try speaking insisting in speaking Thai in, say Africa and see how far that gets you.

I've had first-hand experience with CCNIC that ought to put things into perspective. I registered a domain name at Godaddy, and also registered a couple of DNS servers. Use of these registered DNS servers worked flawlessly, until I had to set them for Chinese clients who had registered their domains via net.cn. They were unable to set these DNS servers because the system kept telling them the DNS servers were invalid. Upon calling net.cn's tech support, the client was told to talk to CNNIC.

So, I spoke to CNNIC on behalf of the client, and was basically told to go talk to Godaddy, and that Godaddy would contact CNNIC and know what to do. I thought this was odd, but sent a support ticket to Godaddy. They confirmed that the DNS servers in question had absolutely no problems and I was even sent a link verifying this over at ICANN, which is an internationally accepted organization for domain names.

I tried CNNIC again and told them that my DNS servers were valid and registered, even recognized by ICANN. I was rebuffed and basically told to go talk to Godaddy again. A few rounds of this with various people resulted in absoF*kinglutely no results. I think Godaddy is right in this case. There's nobody to talk to. The DNS servers are in-fact valid.

What I was told instead, was to go to net.cn and purchase another domain name from there, then pay 10RMB per DNS server for that new domain. I ended up having to do exactly that, to solve this problem.

After this ordeal, I am certain that CNNIC is in fact as evil as they come. They don't care about international standards, just what their omnipotent bosses tell to to do.

JamJam writes "Air Canada has been told to create a special 'buffer zone' on flights for people who are allergic to nuts. The Canadian Transportation Agency has ruled that passengers who have nut allergies should be considered disabled and accommodated by the airline. Air Canada has a month to come up with an appropriate section of seats where passengers with nut allergies would be seated. The ruling involved a complaint from Sophia Huyer, who has a severe nut allergy and travels frequently. Ms. Huyer once spent 40 minutes in the washroom during a flight while snacks were being served."

SOE Also Making a New Star Wars MMOG? 49

Hand Solo writes 'Ten Ton Hammer has an inside scoop on SOE making a new browser-based MMOG based on Star Wars. Rumor is that it will be run on the Free Realms platform. This is generating a lot of buzz around the net. Quoting: 'Former and current Star Wars Galaxies players can still remember the sting of the 'New Game Experience' that changed the face of that game for everyone. SOE has repeatedly said that they have learned from their mistakes, and plan to not repeat them. If SOE isn't expressly targeting the hardcore segment this time around, they (unlike BioWare) won't have quite the same initial level of expectations to deal with. Don't let us give you the impression that SOE plans to take on BioWare, and their highly anticipated MMOG debut, The Old Republic, particularly given the engine the game is rumored to be based on. More plausible is that it will be based off the Clone Wars CGI animated film, offering a more stylized approach to the universe. "

PageRank Algorithm Applied To the Food Web 94

An anonymous reader brings word of a new application for PageRank, Google's link analysis algorithm: monitoring the food web in an ecosystem. A team of researchers found that a modified version of PageRank can predict with great accuracy which species are vital to the existence of others. Quoting: "Every species is embedded in a complex network of relationships with others. A single extinction can cascade into the loss of seemingly unrelated species. Investigating when this might happen using more conventional methods is complicated, as even in simple ecosystems, the number of combinations exceeds the number of atoms in the universe. So, it would be impossible to try them all. Co-author Dr. Stefano Allesina realized he could apply PageRank to the problem when he stumbled across an article in a journal of applied mathematics describing the Google algorithm. 'First of all, we had to reverse the definition of the algorithm. In PageRank, a web page is important if important pages point to it. In our approach, a species is important if it points to important species.'"
