Good antivirus programs have the capability to identify suspect behavior via heuristics and stop many would be infections. Symantec has long been at the back of the pack in producing a product that doesn't slow a PC's performance to a crawl they can't seem to come up with a product that does the job without hogging up all system resources. Poor Symantec. Crying sour grapes IMO. PC security is not a one program and your set operation. Layers of protection make for a secure system. Firewall, antivirus and antimalware,(yes there is a difference between antivirus and antimalware) are recommended by those of us who have and are working the trenches on help forums removing infections for users who fall victim to malware. I would add use an ad blocker , often this is where the nasties lie in wait, if the user doesn't see the ad they don't click. Don't click on random links in emails, text messages etc. You can infect an entire network from one bad link or site. Users are often to blame because they engage in known risky behavior or don't bother with updates to the system or the products they may or may not use for protection. Parents need to restrict kids abilities to install without approval. Kids are often targeted because they are easy to fool. Running non administrative accounts for everyone makes it much harder to get infected. Only use the admin account when you must install new software you know to be safe. Anyone complaining about constant updates is an idiot. Be glad to see your software is updating that only means it is doing it's best to stay ahead of the bad guys.

First, my deepest sympathies to everyone who loves her. Second, I hope some of you asshats NEVER deal with this but that you grow up! Third, give her time it's not been a week since she went through a major trauma. Make sure she gets to have her baby near her for both of them. She may not be able to hold the baby but it can lay on her or beside her. Let her rest. Previous posters said keep the conversation positive and easy to answer questions. Make sure her body is getting lots of massage and movement to prevent atrophy and for stimulation. cablepokerface writes: We've had a significant family catastrophe last weekend. My sister in law (my wife's sister) is 28 and was 30 weeks pregnant till last Saturday. She also had a tumor, it was a benign, slow growing tumor close to her brain-stem. Naturally we were very worried about that condition but several neurologists asset the situation earlier and found the tumor to be a problem, but not big enough for her to require immediate surgery, so we decided to give the baby more time. She was symptomatic but it was primarily pain in her neck area and that was controlled with acceptable levels of morphine.

Then, last Saturday, our lives changed. Probably forever. In the hospital, where she was admitted earlier that week to keep an eye on the baby, the tumor ruptured a small vessel and started leaking blood into the tumor which swelled up to twice its size. Then she, effectively, had a stroke from the excess blood in the brain stem. In a hurry, the baby was born through c-section (he's 30 weeks and it's a boy, he's doing fine) and Saturday night she had complex brain surgery which last 9 hours where they removed the blood and tumor which was pressing on the brain.

Last Sunday/Monday they slowly tried to wake her up but the CT scan shows all higher brain functions to work, but a small part of the brain stem shows no activity. She is locked-in which is a terrible thing to witness since she has virtually no control of any part of her body. She can't breathe on her own, and the only thing she can move, ever so slightly, are her lips, eye lids and eyes. And even that's not very steady. Blinking her eyes to answer questions tires her out enormously as she seems to have to work hard to control those.

I was hoping to have this Ask Slashdot accepted because the crowd on /. is a group of people who have in-dept knowledge of a wide range of topics. And I'm certainly not asking for pity here, but maybe you can help me with the following questions: Does anyone have any ideas on how to communicate better with her? Is there technology that could help? Like brain-wave readers or something? Does anyone have any ideas I haven't thought of regarding communication with her or maybe even has experience with it?

Sure, as a non professional, I occasionally make mistakes. It's a comment though, not a front page article. I have no idea why you think that submitted stories aren't edited.

There is no editing mistake in the submission. Why should poorly constructed comments be OK when they refer to proper editing? Come on, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

A single post is not the same as a submission on one of the worlds most popular tech news sites.

I did think before I posted. There are glaring typos in every post from the poster I am having the conversation with. Thus making complaints about Slashdot's editing is hypocritical at best. Besides there is nothing wrong with the original submission in question.

Point taken about rudeness (although that's not uncommon amongst slashdotters). I do think that Slashdot editors could edit once in a while though; providing the information would be good form. Most non-US publications will refer to "US President Barrack Obama" for prety much this reason even though it would be pretty astounding to find someone who doesn't know who Barrack Obama is. Adding the word "British" to the headline would have made this more immediately comprehensible.

LMAO you criticize Slashdot for not editing, when you don't bother spell checking your own stuff? Not up for an argument but you might want to follow your own advice. Slashdot is not edited, it is user submitted snippets of info with links back to the source, more about the discussion of the subject than journalistic skills. Slashdot has many 'Anonymous Cowards' who are rude posters and trolls. However that is no reason to condone that behavior or participate.

You don't have to know any of it. Use your settings or unfriend those whom you don't want to see things from.

You don't even have to unfriend. You can 1) hide updates from specific persons and apps in your news stream or 2) stop interacting with them and they will automatically be deprioritized and fade away from your news stream unless they do something that gets a lot of attention/likes from others, then that post can pop up again. With both 1) and 2) you can still go in and look at their updates if you want to.

Excellent. I was being lazy and a bit sarcastic. It does amaze me how many have no clue they control what they see in the news feed. Those are the ones who also compromise their own security and all who are friends, because they don't take responsibility for learning about how to secure accounts and the importance of keeping personal info private.

He's criticising Slashdot. Whether he googles or not, Slashdot should still have provided this information. There's no reason not to say "British PM". Perhaps he should know. Perhaps everyone should, but for any snippet of information, there will be a non trivial number of people who are not aware of it. Good journalists provide the information concisely withut forcing the reader to get key details elsewhere.

Slashdot did not make the submission. The link provided in the submission gives the reader all the information needed. There is no need for the poster you are defending to react in such a rude way.

another random user writes: A controversial law banning Vietnamese online users from discussing current affairs has come into effect.


The decree, known as Decree 72, says blogs and social websites should not be used to share news articles, but only personal information. The law also requires foreign internet companies to keep their local servers inside Vietnam.


The new law specifies that social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook should only be used "to provide and exchange personal information".


It also prohibits the online publication of material that "opposes" the Vietnamese government or "harms national security".


Last month the US embassy in Hanoi said it was "deeply concerned by the decree's provisions", arguing that "fundamental freedoms apply online just as they do offline".

PuceBaboon writes: Both Reuters and the BBC are carrying the story of an increase in radiation levels reported by Tepco for contaminated water leaking from storage tanks on site. When this leak was discovered almost two weeks ago, Tepco reported that the radiation level was 100-millisieverts. It now transpires that 100-millisieverts was the highest reading that the measuring equipment in use was capable of displaying. The latest readings (with upgraded equipment) are registering 1800-millisieverts which, according to both news sources, could prove fatal to anyone exposed to it for four hours.
Coincidentally (and somewhat ironically), today is earthquake disaster prevention day in Japan, with safety drills taking place nationwide.
