Comment Re:Aaron Klein is disingenous. (Score 1) 689

I was really shocked that a puppy mill but for nonsense instead of puppies like WND was cited for that "ban right wing bla" quote. Then I clicked though to see how nonsensical it was- this is really irresponsible reporting on /.'s part. Maybe they're trying to make an ironic point about how easy it is to propagate a scurrilous rumor?

Comment Linux documentation = the house in Beetlejuice (Score 1) 769

...for the intermediate user, or weeks-past-beginner user, anyway. Getting the basic commands down wasn't a problem when I first started using Linux, but I stumbled into an enormous gap between the easiest stuff and the more advanced stuff, where it seemed like some key knowledge was presumed but never, ever spoken of. man pages without examples were one regular frustration, and having to search for thirty minutes just to figure out how to track down a simple, crucial piece of information. It was a little like the house in Beetlejuice: sometimes I'd search for help and find a perfect little model village, obviously tended with care, and sometimes I'd open a door onto a vast, yawning desert filled with vicious candy-striped worms.

Comment here's why yau et al are not great mathemeticians (Score 2, Funny) 212

funniest part of the original NYer article:
By early June, Yau had begun to promote the proof publicly. On June 3rd, at his mathematics institute in Beijing, he held a press conference. The acting director of the mathematics institute, attempting to explain the relative contributions of the different mathematicians who had worked on the Poincaré, said, "Hamilton contributed over fifty per cent; the Russian, Perelman, about twenty-five per cent; and the Chinese, Yau, Zhu, and Cao et al., about thirty per cent." (Evidently, simple addition can sometimes trip up even a mathematician.) Yau added, "Given the significance of the Poincaré, that Chinese mathematicians played a thirty-per-cent role is by no means easy. It is a very important contribution."
