AMD Releases Open-Source R600/700 3D Code 307

Michael writes "AMD has just released code that will allow for open-source 3D acceleration on their ATI R600 and R700 graphics cards, including all of their newest Radeon HD 4xxx products. This code consists of a demo program that feeds the commands to the hardware, updates to their RadeonHD driver, and a Direct Rendering Manager update. With this code comes working 2D EXA acceleration support for these newer ATI graphics processors as well as basic X-Video support. AMD will be releasing sanitized documentation for these new ATI GPUs in the coming weeks. Phoronix has an article detailing what's all encompassed by today's code drop as well as the activities that led to this open-source code coming about for release."

To be fair, one of the web-apps above was basically a Lotus Notes database converted into a web-app, and Lotus Notes has its own enormous GUI blackhole which seems to suck in any good GUI and mutilate it into something frightening.

I agree how Lotus Notes is terrible in converting stuff to the web, But I don't really care. It's perfectly possible to make a good webapp, fast in notes, except for the Rich Text rendering which is terribly annoying :P

I don't know about you, but I'll rather be keeping my win98 systems safely protected behind nat and a strict firewall than trusting some stranger offering me unofficial service packs.

The study is important and needs to continue, but you can't assume a rise in temperature over 2 decades means something bad is happening. I don't think we'll ever have enough data to prove whether we are right or wrong until the damage has been done (or apparently not done).

This was my first venture into Sun territory, and it went well. Gentoo set up really well and I'm very impressed with Sun's OpenBoot software and the architecture of the machine in general. If only x86 PCs hadn't dominated so well.
