Journal IamBMETammy's Journal: How do you study?! 4

Seriously.

I have no study skills. None.

I'm not good at this.

I've just always had a good memory and that's worked for me. But I need A's. If I coast I get A's and B's, but that impresses no one.

Did I mention I'm meeting on Tuesday with the pre-med advisor? If he tells me I have a snowball's chance in hell then I'll be selling a kidney or one of the kids (I'm accepting offers, let me know, I'll cut you a deal. The kidney is in excellent condition, I drink lots of water and no alcohol. The kids are cute, mostly white, and completely healthy. Not potty trained but they also lack bad habits so it's a trade off.) so I can afford to take the MCAT study course in the hopes that an excellent score will overshadow what I did to my GPA in the late 90's.

I should get away from the computer. The computer does not help me study.

How do you study?!

  • First of all you must define study. The fact that I am writing a response to your entry, attemting an IM conversation, and trying to do my senior thesis at the same time should give you an indication to my study habits. ;-)

I never had to study in highschool. I made valedictorian with very little effort. I'm not saying this to brag, this is for a compare/contrast with below. I always just remembered things. I tried not to take notes because if I wrote it down I would forget it.

The brain naturally remembers things that interest you. Sometimes finding a different angle to think about things (e.g. what are the consequences of this) can change it from dry facts to something fascinating.

But as far as good study habits go, I'm not your guy.
  • Not that I am a wild and crazy studying genius, but here are a few thoughts:

    - Get a place to study where you won't be interrupted. Usually easier said than done, but someplace without a huge pile of distractions (tv, dirty laundry, screaming kids) will help.
    - Study when you aren't tired if at all possible. This might mean getting up early to study, instead of waiting until the end of the day, with the intention of studying when you are braindead from a long day.
    - Summerize data you study (especially new thi

  • I ran across your JE and decided to chime in here since I am mid-way through my college career and have finally found a study method that works, at least for me. My big thing is writing the information down. I write down anything and everything that I might find useful and important. When I read, I take notes. I take notes from the lectures. And then, after all that, I make flash cards at test time, which are basically all my notes written another time. The key is writing and thinking about what you're wr
